Any one know if you can plant clover and brassicas with a old John Deere planter like what is pictures above? Most grain drills have seperate boxes for small seed such as clover. So it would depend on the drill. I see the one pictured does have a grass attachment. That is the smaller box in front on top.. Hard to see but it's there.

How about getting an ATV front mounted broadcast spreader like Mo recommended before? They seem to be hard to come by, but he said they work well on even small seeds. I'm planning on using that to seed 8 acres of CRP next year.

Just wondering if any one has any experience with using it for small seed. There has to be something out there that farmers used before No-till drills came about.

Why does everyone think they need a fancy planter to plant...... Don't need fancy but want something to make planting go faster and easier. My neighbor plants 750 acres of soybeans with a fertilizer spreader. Then works them in with a $400, 45’ multi weeder pulled with a 1978 Steiger 4 wheel drive worth $5000. He is a multi millionaire because we doesn’t have New anything. What are you planting that requires a new planter.

I understand what you guys are saying, but I am trying to get away from doing this on 3 to 4 acres every year. I use a Herd seeder to do all my seeding now. You can get an electric powered one for a ATV (what I have) or a PTO model for a tractor. I do brassica and clovers and just about all the small seeds with mine....as well as rye, oats, etc. Then use a two-row corn planter for beans and corn. Also get a PTO driven fertilizer speader and you got everything you need. Slick. I HATE WALKING TOO.......and the Herd broadcaster eliminates this for me. I have not used my Solo spreader in years.
I could set a Herd seeder to sow as little as 2 lbs to the acre or as much as 40 lbs. Sometimes I have to make two passes with oats to get enough seed down.....or use my cone fertilizer spreader for that. You do need the small seed plate for doing down to two lbs.....but that is a cheap option. Broadcasts up to 40 feet wide or down to 8 feet or so. depending on how fast you spin the seed plate.

^ I try to apply all my seeds and all my fertilizers and run my sprayer at 4 mph. That way you get pretty good at determining the rates for different seeds and fertilizers. I usually weigh the seeds needed for an acre......and I come out pretty close to the proper seed rates for most of my small seeds. A little experience goes a long way on the set up. I dont know of a better seed broadcaster than the Herd (now built by Kasco). They are not cheap.....but it will last you a lifetime. .......and they sure simplify seeding for me. Takes all the walking out of the program.

I mounted a GT 77 Herd Seeder on the front of my UTV. It is the real deal for broadcasting most any seed I want to. From rye and oats (and soybeans if you want) to clover and chicory and brassica. Two ways to control the rates. Via how much you spen the gate and how fast you turn the spinner plate. I have an electric motor for the spinner......and a rheostat to regulate the spinner plate. NIIIICE. I made a receiver mount into the front of my UTV so I can watch the seeds being applied and still drive where I need to. The front mount is the real deal......and you can buy a receiver mount for the front of many UTV's these days. I made mine and attached it to my winch plate. Slick. If this idea appeals to you let me know.......I could send more pics. Not real cheap. (I think I got about $500 invested) but it sure is a good seed slinger and eliminates walking. I cultipack and or drag most of my seeds to get them into the ground properly. I got a 3 point cultipacker and it is nice for getting around in tight areas.....as us food plot guys need to. I do the same thing as that drill you showed does. I may not get it done in one pass......and with enough acres I may want one of those. I may buy one of those if I had allot of seed to sow and limited time.....like a commercial operator. But for a few acres......I think the solution is said above. My .02 cents.
