I was hunting a field edge on public land a long time ago, before I owned anything. When it was dark, I got down, packed up my climber, and walked into the cut hay field and started walking back. Had no headlamp. There was a heavy dew so it made it damn near silent walking. I got within ten yards of a group of does before any of us knew it. All of sudden that broad wheezed with all she had and I about soiled myself.

I nearly stepped on a possum while walking across a field with my dad. That was the day he learned his boy cussed.
Nearly stepped on a porcupine in Colorado. It was so big I thought it was a bear cub. I don’t walk in the dark out there.

When going to stands, I prefer a small, handheld light and I hold it below waist level and shine it on the ground.
Most of the stands, I do not need a light to reach. Your eyes adjust after 20 minutes or so.

I use a cheap plastic bill clip light that didn't cost me $10. It's 5 green LED's. I used to not use a light until one night I almost stepped on a skunk! That would have ended badly!!! It gives me just enough light to see where I am walking or to help my hands find what they are looking for. The little plastic clips broke off so I got some adhesive backed velcro and it works even better. Here is a link for the one similar to what I use....mine is curved to go on top of the bill of your cap however. www.newegg.com/p/1AG-009R-00006

When I started bow hunting in the ‘60’s, we used skunk scent for a cover scent!

I come home smelling like that and the wife gonna make me sleep outside!!!

Don’t worry about the skunk. When I started bow hunting in the ‘60’s, we used skunk scent for a cover scent! I was far more concerned about the smell that would be on ME far more so than the smell left in the area! I come home smelling like that and the wife gonna make me sleep outside!!! My old hunting dog trapper (Vizsla) got sprayed by a skunk pheasant hunting. We were walking a corn field and all of a sudden there was huge explosion of stink and we all ran and cleared out of the corn field. Trapper comes running up with this grin on his face and when he got to about 20-25 feet I yelled stop. Talk about a change of events, it quickly went from a great day to a really bad day. Trapper was not happy as I tied him to a tree and proceeded to give him 6 freezing cold baths in a row. I started with what I had, dawn dish-washing soap, then apple cider vinegar. By the time i was done he could get in the truck.
