This poll applies to open station hunting where any movement can quickly alert deer to your presence.

I hunt mostly from the ground. Never stand because I'm lazy (and I don't want added movement that isn't needed). I can film with my phone or draw my bow and get a shot without being busted most of the time. I practice shooting from a sitting position a lot.

Back in the day when I was a kid, we only had 1 old treestand that dad and I shared. No seat so it was 100% standing.
Now days it depends. I sit maybe half the time. Some stands I get away with more sitting. Others I have to stand more because a deer can get in range before I know it. I tend to stand more at prime time of dawn and dusk. All day hunts lead to more sitting.
So I answered 50%

I usually sit and read a book. I don’t intend to shoot anything anyway.
I hang my crossbow up and have never shot at a deer with it.
I just want to be out there the last few weeks of October and see what is happening.

I stand as much as possible as deer can show up unexpectedly and handcuff me so I can’t move. They need to make a ladder stand with a stool so I can sit upright.

I'm up and down like a pogo stick on stand until go time(late evening) then I settle down and focus hard looking for deer. I can't stand still to save my life.

Didn't vote as I hunt out of Redneck blind and stand or sit as I please. I don't know if I have more deer now than a few years ago but since I have been sitting in blind 100 percent of time I see way more deer.

If I am in a treestand I sit about 75% of the time. I try to give my stands lots of cover so I usually can stand up without getting spotted. I will stand for awhile just to stretch my legs and sometimes during prime time to get ready.

At first we didn’t even have portable stands, but later on I did the above. |

How long do you guys usually sit? I seldom sit more than 3hrs. It's short enough time to stay still (mostly). I'm pretty much at ready the whole time. I keep my release on the string and my bow hand is either on the grip or right by it. I play on my phone a lot but I do it in a spot that I can put it down and grab my bow with only a few inches of movement.

I stand very little when I bow hunt. 99% of the time I see or hear the deer coming from enough of a distance that I have time to slowly stand in prep for a shot. For the other 1% - I also practice shooting my bow from a seated position.....I still prefer to stand when shooting as I find it easier to pivot at the waist while standing.

To Cat's question....I hunt only a few hours at a time as well, normally. I will pull a few all day sits if the activity warrants it, but it seldom does. I like being able to change locations based on different factors...mostly wind direction. I will hunt in the AM until 11 or so by then it's time for Lunch a good crap and a nap....then back out for a few hours in the evening.

Typically they are 3 hr sits unless its a tricky stand to get in and out of and then I may stay longer. Weather can also influence how long I sit, if the temps are dropping as well as the pressure I will sit longer. If the weather is awful I skip the open station and sit in an enclosed blind. |
