We bought a grape “plant” from Tractor Supply early in 2019. It turned out to be a small cutting with very few roots. We planted and watered it and it grew well last year growing up against an arbor. This year it took off and was loaded with grapes. We ended up with 6-7 pounds of grapes. They were ripe but, the insides were green. Simmer them for 10 minutes to break them down. We used this food mill to drain the liquid Then add the pectin and sugar. We ended up with 14 pints of jelly off the one plant. It tasted pretty good too. I don’t see how you’d save any money though when you add in the cost of sugar , pectin? We had plenty of jars.

You have something homemade with no preservatives or pesticides. I also believe what you have is an old fashion chinois not a food mill. They end up doing the same thing but in a little different way. Either way Homemade beat store bought every time.

Still, homecrafting is a good way to spend time with friends and it always seems to taste better when it's got a good story. For me there is also value in knowing you can get a few meals each month that aren't science experiments. A few things do pencil out if that's important. Meat is a big one. If you have the jars, canned venison can be done for 40 cents/lb or less, and is greatly improved if you ask me. Canned bear is legendary. Homemade stew is also a great one. Nothing beats coming home late from work and popping open a jar of homemade beef or venison stew and eating in 5 or 10 minutes. I used to do canned pork and canned potatoes. A pint of pork, a quart of potatoes, a can of kraut. Mix it all together and warm it up. You've got chow for days, in minutes, and tastes like it'd been the crock pot all day.

I really need to make some bear and barley stew this fall. I'm still sitting on about 5 lbs of bear in my freezer. That could make 15-20 pints of top shelf.

That jelly looks great. I have some wild grapes growing on my garden fence that I bet would make good jam with enough sugar.
My mom made canned venison a few years ago and we had some a week ago at the cabin. Add a little brown gravy mix and throw it over mashed potatoes. It was excellent and a great fast wild game dinner for the cabin.

Looks like another good crop of Concord grapes again this year. We pruned back a lot of the growth to allow more sunlight. They had put on 6’ of growth. I looked into getting pint canning jars but, the guy said there’s a shortage. Lol. All he had received were quart and half gallon.

Jelly isn't my thing but grape juice is great. Last year I made several pints on concentrate, hoping for more this year. It's been a year and jars and lids are hard to come by. I've got plenty of jars and rings but short on lids.
