I just read an article where a northwoods hunter considered his deer stand as a magic carpet.
It’s time away from the world and your mind can wander and contemplate life. No politics, no fake news to sort out, no damn mask for covid, no covid concerns.
Can you find this peace in your deer stand?

This is one reason I like bow hunting, or bow sitting in my case. Also another reason I enjoy mid week hunts and especially hunts in the far northwoods.
Hopefully we can all enjoy it this fall with no conflicts with other hunters, or with trespassers and poachers.

I have 2 magic carpets; hunting and running. A hour run lifts the day away just as well as sitting on a rock ledge for a sunset.

When that doe stood on the dime i placed in the shooting lane last weekend, I gotta say, I was little pleased with my creation. When they came walking in on my access trail and got downwind and behind my blilnd I was grumbling a little bit, but nothing bad happened. Maybe the scent protocols do work. I wouldn't rely on it, but I won't complain either.

Now, I am generally a pretty calm and peaceful dude with minor flare ups of stress and anxiety. I still enjoy bowhunting, but I don't need it for quality of life.

The entire time I'm at deer camp, I feel calm. Well, after the first day, particularly the first hour or so of making sure everything's in one piece and unpacking the truck etc.... I can honestly feel my entire mental/physiological state change. I wish I felt that way every day. But for now, I have to pile up the treasure so I'm not homeless.

As I enter in to the next chapter in my life, I am seeing things a bit differently these days. While I’ve always been a fairly level headed individual, there was always the underlying stress to meet certain goals. I very much look forward to more simple things now. Camp has always been a stress reliever, but with objectives to meet. Moving forward, I just want to enjoy walking my trails with the single shot 20, getting strong enough to climb in to a box stand to enjoy the sunset, and corkin’ for a few walleyes or crappies. Life is fragile boys. Take in all the good shit! The rest is just noise.

If you don’t feel strong enough to climb in a stand, take a stool, or have one of the youngsters place a folding chair out for you. It works. My uncle hunted into his 90’s in that way. My Grandfather into his 80’s.

My dad still climbs ladder stands at nearly 74. Always tied in from the ground.
But he has one of the low sitting turkey chairs he uses with his crossbow. He has killed a couple from the ground and one is so close he was shooting up. He said it ups the excitement level of deer hunting.

I have a spot picked out to build a ground blind with maybe 2-3' of steps for entry to the blind. About 100 yards from the house. I figure I can drag my old fat ass into that spot for as long as I'm ambulatory. Plan to get it done next year.

Bow hunting is definitely my magic carpet, I love it!!
I can sit all day too if the deer are moving. Nothing better!

About 75 yards from the bathroom and his easy chair in the living room. One step up to his stand. A chair was on the platform and a rack of brush and sticks pile in front of him. He shot nice bucks for two years in a row.

I’ve been hunting since 1973. Hunting has always been a magic carpet ride even when I go a week without seeing a deer. Now that I’ve bougbt the property any time I’m out in the woods it’s my magic carpet ride. Whether it be taking a walk, running the chainsaw, planting trees, planting plots or hunting. Hunting seems to take a back seat now to working in the woods but, I’ll still be out there this fall from dark to dark every available chance from October 31 through December 15th. Then the fun begins.
