Seems to me that Kaolin is a close cousin to bentonite? There is a big Kaolin mining operation just west of New Ulm. They ship many rail cars of the stuff. I think they may use it more for bricks or pottery?

When researching water holes not long ago, I remember coming across using cat litter as I believe it contains bentonite. it was either you wanted the clumping kind or not, I cant remember

That kitty litter recommendation is really interesting. I have one leaky section in my beaver dam and I think I might try dumping some kitty litter there next year.

One would think the cats on this site would be all over this topic. So far......SILENCE. Grin.

We have a plan to add a few more landscape tubs, as well as hand dig (4 guys) a spot that has a berm already and then add some bentonite in that location. A bigger pond in the future with hopefully some cost share from NRCS...we will see?

I have two tiny waterholes in the woods like the last one, and my neighbor has one just across the line. They can be good during a warm rut hunt. All three are also on a gentle north slope, which I think helps. That area of my property is usually the best for rut hunts, regardless of weather.

What are your guys thoughts of water holes and how effective they are when a property already has an abundance of water. I have allot of marsh throughout my property where there is abundant water to drink. Most of these can have allot of grass in and around them but in many places there is water for the wildlife.

I do as well, but I think it’s a tool to steer traffic or keep them in an area longer. The dugout was a two for one protect as I needed the fill to level the plot nearby. I’ve also had a lot of my natural watering spots dry up the past two summers so thought this could be an option for me to fill manually in the future.

Not sure it helps much on water abundant properties. Two things it can help, great place for cameras, and a buck might stop for a quick drink if you have a pond/water tub by your stand .

I put some small water tubs near my old salt licks where the deer still eat some stumps. The deer do some scent checking on the stump and the water trough. Decent rains keep the tubs partially filled. I think its a place for the deer to check-in socially.

Was looking at my cell cam pics tonight and thought I would show an example of one of my tubs. I dont bury them.....and they usually have a few inches of water in them year around. this is a rubber one.....and I think it cost about $10 at one of the farm stores. The bears dont seem to wrect these rubber ones. I get numbers pics every week with a deer taking a drink or having a smell of these troughs.
