Doesn’t matter how often he fills it. Answer will depend on soil type you have and precipitation amounts in your local area.

We’ve shot a couple bucks over man made waterholes/tubs. Plan is to add more in the future!

Do any of you have DIY water holes?? What do you think about them??? There's water everywhere on my property. It can get scarce if it's real dry. I've got a couple tiny ones, but not for the water. I needed the dirt. Gonna dig two more tiny ones next year.

I have two dug outs and two earthen dams. The dams were put in under a government program. There is another dugout or wide spot in a ditch that we dug out, a small spring with a dam, and a cattle waterhole that’s I didn’t find until I lived here about three years.
All of them work.

I've got one area that hss an intermittent "seep".......or kinda a spring. I think it is fed by a few ground water pools just a bit uphill from this area. The area seems to be a meeting place for all kinds of deer. I put a salt block on a rock nearby......and it has a couple of trees that serve as rub posts and such. Corn, soybeans, clover and brsica plots all around. Seems like a real magnet.....until this fall.
Then nothing. I still cannot figure to where my deer went this fall. Oh well.....the neighbors had a good hunt
Snake bit.

The previous owner did a small pond on my farm in Iowa and it’s money. I’m trying to figure out plan to add two more similar set ups. I was shocked by the number of deer that visit the pond during daylight.

On my 5.6 acres i have a 50x50 yard food plot. Put a landscaping pond ($50 on craigslist) and almost every deer that enters the field visits the water hole. If the deer is at least two they know how to kick open the ice. Filled it once and rain has kept it filled.

I put in one this summer, never had to fill it till October and could have probably used another fill end of October, but we were unusually dry for that time of year if I remember, it was hilarious watching the deer drink out of it, Does kicking their young ones away so they could be the first ones to drink. I think Use really picks up when you need it the most, Oct-nov, most of the green vegetation is gone so the deer need to seek out water.

For the small watering tank type watering holes does it matter if you dig them in versus just set them down on the dirt?
