This discussion was buried in another thread and deserves it’s own thread.
Bucks often drag their feet. Catscratch pointed out how does walk and how a person can imitate the sounds of their walk. Perhaps he can describe it again in more detail here.
After 50 plus years of deer hunting, I finally realized that I can often identify buck travel in the woods by the sound in the dry leaves, probably with a fair amount of accuracy. I have probably been doing this subconsciously for years.
Discussion?

Sandbur, I film a lot while hunting. I usually know before I see a deer if I'm going to have a bow in my hands or a camera. I can't stand to have anything over my ears or to be contained. Every time I've hunted from a box blind I can't relax and spend a ton of time sticking my ear towards a window. I'm sure it would be a sacrifice worth making if it was colder here.
I'm also uber careful about sneaking in. I use that goofy doe step that I described on the other thread to cover that last little bit of access, often get within 30yds of a bedded deer without spooking them. I am not stealthy enough to sneak up on a bedded deer with silence. When I use the doe step and come from the right direction they will have their ears turned to me but are looking the opposite direction. When I try to actually sneak they are usually standing and looking in my direction when I get into view.

Could you post a video with sound of that approach? Close up of the foot action? I have approached stands with the Mimicked cadence and sounds of a squirrel digging for acorns and felt it worked at killing my heaviest buck.

Lol, I'm on forum... talking about walking like animals... and being asked to post a video of it. This situation is weird, but I'm going to do it. Won't be for a while and the internet/youtube will have to cooperate, but I'll do it. Sounds like you blended into your environment when you killed your heaviest buck; scent, sound, and vision. How close did you get?

How close did you get? I went to a stand in the middle of the woods and he almost immediately came by me at 30 yards or a bit more. Fresh tracks in the snow indicated he had just went in there. Maybe my walking method wasn’t part of the success, who knows, but it wasn’t far from where he entered the woods.

Does anyone ever grunt and jog to your stand? Or make turkey sounds? I must be the only weirdo on here.

A walking turkey sounds like a walking man. Way back in the day when dad and I shared a single climbing stand, we bow hunted on the ground a lot. I would turkey call in an attempt to cover my noise. We didn’t kill many deer back then so who knows if it ever worked.

No video yet. I just might do it in the nude because of koch's request of "sexy"! Spent all day working, cooking, and hunting with the oldest. Started drinking barley pop an hour (or 3) ago. Probably best if I don't post to youtube tonight. Conventional wisdom has never been my strong suit though.
