I have the same problem as Cat at times. The mind has a way of controlling everything. I normally turn on the TV to a real shitty show. Have you ever though it maybe Sleep apnea? No idea mike. This shit all started when I watched the old man beat a guy to death with a claw hammer when I was about 10. Haven’t slept much since. Probably never will sleep right. Don’t know what I got. John If that's the way it started I fell safe enough and far enough away from you or either a good enough friend to say. Maybe you should see a shrink.

Can you imagine me at a fucking shrink? She would probably call the cops the first ten minutes with all the fucked up shit I could talk about. Naw, I will just stay fucked up and look for a sleep aid of some type. Beer and booze ain’t working.

It seems like you know why you aren't sleeping already. Dealing with that emotional trauma will probably be the only way you ever sleep at all normally.

Just Looking for a sleep aid. Folks over 50 can suffer from a lack of melatonin. Melatonin that you buy (not produce in your body) is synthetically produced. Pretty sure there's no penis in it I've been taking melatonin for a couple months now. It does seem to help me stay asleep and to fall asleep a bit more easily. If you're open to trying something, it is worth a shot. Talking to your Dr. (yeah, yeah I know) would always be a good idea before starting any supplements.

Let me tell you a little story. I started smoking when I was 12. I tried to stop in my early 20's when I had my first kid. Worked for a short time then I was back smoking. Late 20's another kid and tried again with same results. In my 40's I tried again, using about every chew, patch and pill available, not one worked. Then in my 50's a buddy of mine talked me into getting hypnotized as it worked for him. I didn't do the group thing it was 1 on 1 and cost $90. I figured I'd be throwing $90 away but I did it anyway. It was a 45 minute drive to the place and I smoked just about a pack on the way over. Even while sitting there I figured it would never work. I even told the guy I'm wasting money and wes wasting time as it will never work. He said we'll see about that. I'll be damned if it didn't work. It's been 10 years and I haven't had one. He had brochures for things he did and sleeping was one of them. Maybe this would work for you John.

I usually need to read to shut the mind down before I can fall asleep. If I am stressed and can’t sleep during the night sometimes moving to a different location/bed/couch helps me. Oh yeah I also use some kind of background noise. Yep I am a diva when it comes to sleep.

Now that I've spent close to a decade listening to that fan while going to sleep...I also require that background noise. There's quite a bit of research out there on white noise and sleep.

For nights we can’t sleep we put the calm app on which is sounds or sleep stories. Our go to is Mathew McConaughey reading a sleep story. Fucker puts me to sleep in 2 minutes every time.

I am trying a recliner tonight just to see if that is what I need. So far nothing. No beer either. I could die from this experiment.

Alcohol interferes with your REM sleep. That's the deep sleep stage, the stage that refreshes your body. I do my best to not drink 5 days a week. Sometimes I fall a day short. I can firmly attest to much better, deeper sleep on those days that I do not drink. Many folks think they need to drink to fall asleep. That may work short term, but the sleep they get is not REM sleep. Lack of sleep causes stress. Stress shortens lives. End of my $.02
