Your dolgo seedling holds apples this late in the year? My grafted dolgo drops in early/mid fall, but my seedling dolgo aren't fruiting yet. Maybe I'll get lucky and have some dolgo seedlings hold until late winter. Dolgo seedlings vary considerably in apple size and holding time from my experience.

I drove past the Courthouse Crab today. Still holding fruit...and there are some nice looking watersprouts up high. I need to run over there with a long handled pruner.

Maybe the county could hire you so it looks official? Close to the jail. We need to get a few more of these started, in case a grounds keeper decides to take down the tree. I think two of us currently have some young trees.

I think two of us currently have some young trees. If I can grab some scions off that tree, I plan to graft it to some wild crabs...both top works and cleft grafts. Seems like a "variety" that we should make sure of survival. I'm certainly glad that I grabbed a couple scions from LPVFW before it was cut down. I will graft at least two more of those this spring too.

I believe I have one growing and I know Freeborn has at least one. Stu, if you end up getting some scion I would take 2-3 sticks as I have some wild trees that would look good top worked to this!

What’s a late dropping apple that will compliment a Chestnut Crab ... to be planted in Otter Tail County.

What's "late"? October/November or January/February Late as possible, but more like October/November? Many varieties will ripen/hang into October/November. Liberty, Fireside, Connell Red, NW Greening, Honeygold, Tolman Sweet, Prairie Spy, Spartan, Golden Russet....plenty of others too. Those just come immediately to mind. I imagine Art will give you some crab varieties to look for.

What's "late"? October/November or January/February Late as possible, but more like October/November? When Blue Hills starts accepting orders, get Buckman Crab and Big Dog from him. Neither have shown any significant disease around red cedars. I sent him lots of scion this year. At one time Ryan wanted me to patent these trees, but I chose not do so. I do not make any money off of the sale of these trees but they have worked well for me. It would be interesting to see their drop times in Iowa.
