Yesterday while hauling brush i had a branch snap back and stick me right in the ear hole. One in a million type situation. It immediately hurt and my ear started ringing. The branch was still stuck in my ear and I pulled it out without issues.
Based on my internet search I'm sure I ruptured my ear drum. It sounds like normally that heals on its own, so that's what I'm going with. Anyone have experience with this?
I can hear again, but there is dried blood in my ear. My internet search said that's somewhat normal. I don't go to the doctor too often, so I'm hoping it will heal in its own if I keep it dry and clean for a month. Any thoughts?
My nurse wife has thoughts, but I ignored them and didn't go to the doctor.

An Internet deer habitat forum seemed to be a decent place to look for advice.

I’d listen to your wife and go to a doctor on this one. If I’d waited much longer last summer to go to the ER I’d have lost my kidney. I’d try to make an appointment with your pcp rather than sit in the ER though.
On the helmet wearing subject, if I’d of had my helmet on last fall when the stuck pole saw came lose and hit me in the nose then I wouldn’t have a scar on my face. I’ve had other close calls while I’ve worn the helmet carrying firewood through brush where brush has snapped back at my face and the helmet has saved me from scars or lost eyes.

My wife was able to get me an appointment, so I'll be heading to the Mayo Clinic this afternoon. I'm fairly sure I would suck at sign language, so I'll have a professional take a look at my ear.
Who knew a buckthorn branch could cause such a problem.

^^^good call. I once had a nanking cherry bud tip go under the screen of my cutting helmet. A little piece got stuck in my eye. I fought it for a few days, but it just wouldn't work itself out. Went to an eye DR. and they removed the piece of wood. They told me it would have never worked itself out due to continued blinking pushing it back in. Had the same thing happen with a tiny piece of metal once. Same deal, fought it for a few days then went in and had it removed.
Dr. offices aren't my favorite places to go either, but it makes sense to use them when necessary.

My ear drum is damaged in 3 places, but the doctor thought it was scabbed over already so that's a good sign. He prescribed some antibiotic ear drops and I'm supposed to come back in a week to make sure things are good. I should be good to go.
My wife showed up for the visit and signed me up for a full physical and blood work since I very rarely go to the doctor. That was a pretty sneaky move, but I cancelled that portion of the appointment at the front desk on the way out.
