I’m 86% sure this is a maple. I found two of these that look like they’re getting bored out by some kind of insect. Never seen that in maple, and I’m even more certain these ain’t elm. Any ideas?

I think I figured it out. I'm gonna leave it open for a bit before I poison the sample. I wanna see if anyone else guesses what I think it may be.

Sapsucker woodpecker - if you google sapsucker tree damage you will find similar pictures. Wild crabapples around here all have the same holes in them from sapsucker damage.
I even had one of those sapsuckers pecking on my house for some reason. I told my sling shot shooting 8 year old that he has the green light to kill any bird pecking on the house. The offender was quickly removed from the gene pool.

I had a big crabapple when I lived in town. It had rows of holes in it like the pic, but the rows were probably only an inch apart. TONS of holes in it. Research pointed towards sapsucker. I never saw one that I know of though.

That's what I came up with as well. I gotta have a talk with FMC about whether we need to control these.

^^^if you decide to control them, keep it off the open forum. They're federally protected

Sap sucker - they create these patters in the bark that gives them away. Eventually they will grid enough of a grid that the bark will fall off and expose the sapwood of the tree. They will return time after times and the pattern grows and grows. They killed an ornamental cherry tree at my folks place. The holes invite insects and rot and the tree slowly died.
Only way I am aware of to control them is with a shot gun. And like was mentioned....practice the 3-S's Shoot, shovel, shut-up!

Open Forum Commentary - I would never consider shooting at much less killing a federally protected species like a Cormorant, Sandhill Crane, Sap Sucker, Wolf, etc. I can understand why someone might given the amount of damage they can do to a local ecosystem, but me personally? Nope. Never. The Feds know best in all aspects of my life and I’m happy to oblige by the rules they set forth.

Additionally, you don't have any guns left to shoot them with after losing them in that terrible boating accident.
