Open Forum Commentary - I would never consider shooting at much less killing a federally protected species like a Cormorant, Sandhill Crane, Sap Sucker, Wolf, etc. I can understand why someone might given the amount of damage they can do to a local ecosystem, but me personally? Nope. Never. The Feds know best in all aspects of my life and I’m happy to oblige by the rules they set forth. Rumor has it you wasted all your ammo shooting at, and missing, spotted owls before you lost all your guns in a freak boating incident. What a shame.

I will say this. I've spent thousand of hours in the woods and orchards and I've never actually seen the sapsucker drill those small holes in a symmetrical line. They must take weekends off. I've watched pileated woodpeckers hundreds of times though but, their holes are much larger. It's amazing the force they have when the go full bore.

All my apple trees are covered in those holes. Doesn’t seem to bother the trees at all.

All my apple trees are covered in those holes. Doesn’t seem to bother the trees at all. I think older trees can survive. I had a young crab totally girdled all the way around and the top died. I have a good sized tree where the sapsuckers started to girdle all the way around and the top started looking sick. I wrapped the damage in window screen and the tree has recovered. I'd never shoot one of the cute little buggers, but I may pay for their relocation

I saw lots of them on my 40. You already know what it is. I've never noticed any long term damage but my 40 had a shit load and a half of maples. I would treat them just like a wolf. SSS

Any halfway decent cat should keep those sapsucker populations in check.
I imagine for a guy with a shotgun it would probably be a lot like woodcock hunting.

I spent a few summer afternoons with a golf cart, a cooler of beer, and a *borrowed* shotgun last year. I was attempting to *scare away* any sapsuckers. Never saw one

Or use them for wolf bait and kill the wolves for the hugel pit. That seems like the cat thing to do.

If I have an eagle or a swan that I'm eating, I'll drag it into the brush and cover it with leaves. Then I'll perch in a tree nearby to nap and keep watch over it. If something else decides to come around and try to jack my bounty, well they get added to the leaf pantry too.
