We're too far north (30 miles north of Grand Rapids) to have exactly what you're looking for (Golf, restaurants, etc) but an area where I would have you explore is Lake Pokegama in Grand Rapids. Don't know exactly the costs associated with the lake but I spend a weekend on the lake each year. A lot of homeowners vs cabins, never feels "busy" or over crowded. Close to Grand Rapids, golf courses and restaurants. Beautiful clear lake with a definite up north feel. Have a good buddy living on the lake now and always enjoy my time there. Miltona and the Alex area would definitely be too busy for me! Wow you must be pretty close to our place Cade - we're just east of Marcell on Three Island. Pretty close as the crow flies. We're on King, just off Scenic 7. Take 4 wheeler trail up to Antler store in summer all the time.

Going to be headed up one of these weekends.

Hard to believe a small lake with only a walk in public access can get fished out. How's Gunn? Always been curious about that lake.

I had a place on Big Trout lake on the Whitefish Chain. Some of those lakes may offer what your looking for. Pretty laid back lifestyle yet has lots of connected lakes and it never gets old and impossible to know it all. Far enough from Brainerd....yet Brainerd medical is close enough when that time comes.
Something that people forget.....that as you get older you make MANY more trips to the doctor and specialists. Seems your always getting tests done. I would be reluctant to get too far off the grid. It's one reason we moved toward the Baxter area from the Cross Lake area when we built. I too do not like busy and traffic.....so we stay north of that traffic zoo that Baxter offers for the most part. The weekends are nuts everywhere. Alex is impossible to get anywhere......IMO.
My wife and I wanted to like Alex.....but it does not have the same "up north" feeling to us. I guess the area just lacks the pine tree feel. Miltona is getting there tho. Good lake. Jerry.....The Park Rapids area should not be overlooked.......IMO.

I would not mind replicating something similar to what we have in Arizona (on a golf course, little maintenance) but with a little more room than Arizona. We have our farm and a lake place to go to, we can also build a storage building on both these places so that opens more possibilities. Considering we will be in Minnesota less than 6 months a year and we plan on traveling when we retire I want a home that is less upkeep and something relatively new.
