Cool mount. My son shot a buck with velvet about 5 years ago during gun season. Every thing appeared normal on it. We figured it was a case of low testosterone. I should have checked. Believe it or not I’m allergic to deer hair. Break out and sneeze for 1/2 hour if I touch it. I have to be very careful when gutting (with gloves) etc... Same. Deer hair and cleaning catfish leave me in hives. Weird, but have to put up with it. This year is the first time I've gotten something mounted so I'm used to having antlers in hand and replaying the hunt in my mind. 3yrs would be damn long wait!

I’m guessing taxidermists that are that far out are either not full time taxidermists or are kind of lazy. My taxidermist is a year and he is crazy busy with not only deer but full size mounts from Africa, Canada, and also stuff like alligators. 2-3 years is ridiculous

When my boys get older I'm going to tell them I'm allergic to deer hair too and they can gut and drag all my deer for me.

He is not lazy and only does Deer. He also refuses to rush his work and only does so many per week. With good deer numbers, his work load has increased.

Please don’t take offense Kaleb but, you’re statements on this taxidermy thread are the first statements on capitalism from a millennial that I’ve heard from in years - excluding SD and Bob the Cat. It’s actually refreshing hearing that but, I fear that if things keep heading the way they’re heading you won’t have a choice when you’re my age.

I think a lot of it depends on the taxidermist and what they'll allow to be their work. Some guys farm out some or a lot of their work and others will do all the work themselves. All depends on what quality they want going out the door.
I know one shop here in tucson where you'd be lucky to get your mount completely done by the original taxidermist because he has so many people working for him. His quality can be suspect but they knock your mount out in 6-12 months.
Then there's this other shop where the guy keeps the quality to a premium and he's the only one doing the work. His lag time is a minimum of 2 years and usually goes way beyond that. But his mounts are exceptional.
So it's mostly all in what you want and when you want it. No right or wrong answer.

I actually don’t mind the wait. Rick Is very good. He has a mount that he’s doing right now for a guy that shot a Ram in Mexico and the tag along cost $75,000!😳

I believe the guy I’ve used was $450. He’s about 7-8 months. A local kid shot a buck of a lifetime 3-4 years ago. We told him to take him to a good taxi because he’d be sorry if he didn’t. He went to the cheapest he could find and spent $200. It was the worst looking mount I’ve ever seen. He’s stuck with it now.
