I'm up to snuff on silver maples, I know they aren't that. If they're reds, should they have red leaves during the growing season? Nope. Don't confuse native red maples with the purple/red leafed landscape maples. Red maples will have little red "blossoms" in very early spring, and many of the leaves will turn red in the fall. Red maples usually change color in the fall before the sugar maples. I gotta do more looking in spring. I could swear I've got those red blossoms on my place in the spring. I had programmed my brain to think they were all red oaks. But I've only found the one red oak so far. Gonna need more flagging tape.

SD, Sugar maples have lots of multiple branches at the tips of the limbs. Red maples have singles or usually 3 tops spread out like a trident. Here’s an old sugar maple showing the limb tips.

The knowledge here is amazing. I try to barely get by identifying trees by bark and leaf. Never knew anything about branch structure.

You’d think I could find a good photo of a red maple but here’s the best I could find right now. Look at the tips. They are single. They don’t have multiple spurs on the tips.

This has been very helpful. I've got enough to go on now. When I was whackin' competition for my white cedars, I came across a large tree I'm nearly positive is a maple. I left it stand because I'm pretty sure there aren't too many race ready for syruping like that. And it's right along my new trail up by the road. I've seen deer eating up fallen maple leaves, so they've got some use in my eyes if this syrup thing never happens. I also wouldn't mind a carpet of maple sprouts for browse as well.

I know of a spot in northern Itasca county where there are lots of maples. There is a brief time in late September when deer move in there to eat the red leaves from maple. This is an upland spot and maybe 30-40 miles north of you.

I’m planting Maples at Nassau Deluxe for sure, not for deer, for me. A mixture of red and gold Fall foliage will be nice.

If you can find a local(ish) nursery, you may be able to get some good sized landscape trees to get off to a quicker start. The named varieties/cultivars/whatever of maples at nurseries are really nice trees. They'll extend your fall color season too.

I looked for small maples with the leaf color I liked in the fall. Move them then, or mark them with surveyors ribbon for moving in the spring.
Be sure and protect the trunks as they are susceptible to sunscauld.
