Do you purchase a special license and how do you register the wolf?
I was just wondering about the accuracy of the harvest numbers and if any group could be inflating that number.

Are the hides being viewed as a trophy or are the hides being sold for fur? What is the going rate on the fur market? I think most are being taken to a taxidermist for mounting or tanning.. I believe that you have only so long to have green fur before it becomes illegal in Wisconsin.

The wolves need to be brought to a DNR employee to register, so fake registration is less likely than if it was registration by phone. In that case I agree that anti-hunters could buy licenses and register ghost wolves to close down the season early.

The wolf hunts in Wisconsin are by draw. Application fee is $10.00. 50% of tags are by preference points and 50% of tags are by random draw. After you get drawn you have to buy license if you want to hunt. $49.00 for resident and a lot more for non-resident. Then if you are lucky and harvest wolf you have to register it online within 24 hours. The harvested wolf also must be tagged by a DNR game warden or DNR biologist in person or at the Taxidermist. So there is little to no chance of fake registrations. If it was a fake registration the person would be in big trouble when the warden came to register and there was no wolf. The tree huggers did apply for tags as there were 4000 tags available but only about 2700 licenses sold.

The hides should be excellent with that cold spell we had a couple weeks ago. Any wolves with a thin pelt should have died after that weather. I have not talked to any successful wolf hunters but it is breeding season for wolves right now so some of the breeding wolves could be rubbed.

I'm happy to hear they will get around 200 wolves. That will save a lot of deer in the part of the state that could use some more deer. Lets see......200 wolves x 90 deer (ave killed / wolf) = 18,000 deer are gonna be around due to wolves taken out of circulation. .....And, that is just first year result. Seems like a good trade-off to me. EDIT: OK In fairness I also have heard that each wolf "ONLY" kills 20 deer per year. So, doing the math on that means 200x20=4,000 deer per year. Now I only can kill ONE deer per year on my license. So that means that wolves have more "rights" to the deer than I do. The whole world is F'd up. F'n Biden. Interesting story, many years ago, I think it was on the QDMA forum there was a Wisconsin DNR Biologist on the forum saying how good the wolf was for Wisconsin. He stated that a wolf only eats 18 deer a year. He even gave the study that he was getting his facts from. I looked up the study, it was done out west and it was 18 elk per wolf not deer. I pointed it out to him and he could not explain except for saying that maybe the wolves out west needed more food. I think 50 deer per wolf would be a more fair estimate.
