My first seed order of the year arrived, so we must be getting closer to spring. My CRP seed order arrived from Albert Lea Seed and I was impressed with their selection as well the price. They had the grasses and both clovers that my blend required and also all of the regular food plot blends I typically order from Welter's. The prices were cheaper here too, so that's a bonus. My CRP blend has orchard grass, timothy, int. wheatgrass, switchgrass, red clover and white clover. I'll pick up the oat companion crop from a local seed dealer.
I'm trying to dial in my no-till pumpkin program, so I ordered some new seed this year. This year I'm going to plant a companion crop between some of the pumpkin rows. I'll be planting my pumpkins in soybean stubble just like before and right after planting I'll spray with round-up to give the pumpkins a competition free field. That worked great 2 years ago, but I had more weed pressure last fall so I want to change things up. This year I ordered 5 pounds of a full season brassica seed (kale) and I will broadcast this lightly between the pumpkin rows. Hopefully it will reduce the weed competition without negatively impacting the pumpkin growth too much. Those pumpkin vines will grow right over an apple tree cage, so I'm not too worried about the slow growing kale choking them out.
If the kale takes the place of some weeds and provides a little late season deer food it will be a good addition. If not, I guess I'll add the leftover kale seed to my brassica blend next year.

I’m tilling my pumpkin strip in our field plot. It worked in the garden. Figured might as well try the same thing out there. I’ve got to get some seed still. Jung didn’t have any Connecticut field pumpkin seed last weekend when I stopped in.

My garden seeds showed up today. Just got two orders left to go. One is the big one from my local guys for spring cereals. The other is my clover seed.

I bought garden seed at Jung last weekend. Sweet corn, peas, radish, watermelon, pumpkin, cucumber. These are actual garden seed, not garden food plot seed.

Just wanted to be clear. We grow deer in our garden. I just gotta train ODB up to where he can harvest one now, and not just go out to the blind to look at deer, drink whiskey, and take naps.

That last sentence sounds like a fine afternoon. I’m hoping this blind I’m building will be used for something similar. Easy pickings.
