The most shade tolerant spruce is likely black spruce. White and Norway will both survive and grow in light shade, neither will do well in deep shade.

Stu, do you think black spruce will do well if it is too far from the natural range? I am worried about heat stress. My black spruce are on a very gentle north slope with white spruce planted south of them.

My black spruce are on a very gentle north slope with white spruce planted south of them. I don't know. I've got blacks doing well here after 3 years, but they are in pretty heavy soil and in some shade. I don't really like black spruce that much...but they are indeed shade tolerant. I don't think I'll plant anymore here. I'll likely just give more sun to the norways and whites. edit...I just remembered that at one point I had dug up some tiny black spruce seedlings from a fly-in in Ontario. I brought them back (likely very illegally) in a cooler on a bit of ice. I planted them in a shady/damp area at my old place. They were maybe 4' tall and still alive when I sold the place.

About 7 years ago I attempted to turn a boxelder/buckthorn infested creek bottom into a spruce bedding area and it was a massive failure! I poisoned most of the buckthorns and boxelders, but I didn't keep up on the subsequent control and they grew back and swallowed up the white spruce. Annual weeds and blackcap bushes also grew like crazy and likely contributed to the white spruce failure. The only spruce I still have alive are on random areas that didn't have as much subsequent competition for one reason or another.
I think your plan could work, but I would definitely plan on more competition control if possible. I'm not giving up on my goal to have an acre or two of spruce bedding, but I learned the hard way what didn't work in this specific location.

When I go on hunting trips I often bring back a couple seedlings that are not found in MN or WI. I'd like to think 75 years from now a logger will stand and stare at a tree trying to figure out how in the world that tree ended up there. My old house in town mysteriously even had some Wyoming sage brush growing on the open lot behind my house.

We took four White Spruce off of our South facing road frontage in Kooch County. Two are in pots and are still green. Two got planted at Nassau Deluxe and are going strong.
It’s fun.

Since this is primarily a grove (9 acres and a house) we are going to plant spruce, maple and possibly hackberry in the spots cleared of buckthorn/Boxelder. We may even cage a few pine. The edge will be new Spruce, red oaks and swamp Bur oaks . There will be one food plot in the woods. Quite a few apple trees as well. There are 4 apple trees already. Pics of current plot and the edge of the property.. borders good crop land.
