For those interested, I don't live at property but spend 160+ days there each year. Spring to fall. Keep track of what's going on there with cell cams.
Besides food plots for wildlife I have a 2 acre pollinator plot, wildlife pond, apple, chokecherry, plum, trees. Have pics of everything from moose, bear to cougar. Birds to numerous to mention. A bit bummed, last night got a couple TERRIBLE pics of coyote taking a rabbit, not clear enough to share, was on the poorest cell cam I use.

Do they have access to sugar beet fields in your area? Did it take them long to adapt to eating sugar beets? I tried a few sugar beets once and they had very little use. Deer numbers are better now and I suspect beets and turnips might get some use.

No access to sugar beets in my area. Deer started in on the beets as soon as they sprouted, eating them all summer & fall till gone, only had about 1/2 acres the first year. Since then I've planted 3-6 acres each year that get absolutely destroyed. As far as turnips, radishes at my place not much luck, the nibble on green leaves all summer but seem to hit the leaves after a hard frost, only a little bit of use of the actual turnip/radish.

I spent a few seasons hunting deer in Marshal County back in the 70's. Interesting times....especially when visiting the saloon in Grygla. I think I saw the biggest buck of my lifetime near Agasiz.....absolute monster size buck. When I saw him, he was heading my direction when suddenly he zagged into the cover, and shortly after a young hunter comes along....about 500 yards behind him.....and he was tracking that buck after getting a bullet into him. We talked a minute or so....and that kid was determined to get that buck. We were getting a light snow....and the hunter wanted to keep the pressure on the buck before he lost the tracks (blood and hoof). At the end of the day and in the dark....I saw that buck again and the same young hunter who took that buck. He and his buddy had him loaded into the back of a station wagon.....and the buck was a real horse. I think it may have been the largest deer taken that year (outdoor news) but cannot remember the weight or the score. He was massive. The kid looked wiped out from the chase. I saw him first at about 8 am and he took the deer about 3 PM....IIRC. Said he was about bled out.

Foggy.. I have hunted the Grygla MN area since 1967, Diamonds was the watering hole of choice in Grygla. Many a happy evening there. I have a vague recollection of the buck that you talk about, was the talk of the area. Biggest buck I've seen was while I was driving home at night, he crossed the road in front of us about 5 miles west of Grygla, an absolute monster

Funny place.

I walked the edges of the alfalfa field looking for gopher mounds and keeping an eye for a shed. My neighbor/renter planted red clover mixed with alfalfa on the lower edge of the field. The red clover, even where the frost isn’t out is showing some nice green leaves. The alfalfa has just a few tiny green leaves.
Deer should now be fine here with rye cover or forage crops on 3 sides of my place. Never less, 6 fawns were scrounging for apples under a flowering crab just before dark.
Our fields are pretty much bare of snow. There is a tremendous advantage for those deer in ag country over those in more of a woods environment.

Plenty of green leaves starting to show up where the sun hits. I need to get some frost seeding done yet.

Just a a little bit of green starting to show. Lots of black gold in the plots though.

This thread indicates 2021 but I thought I would put this question here.
Has anybody in the north started planting beans yet? What are soil temperatures looking like? I was thinking of planting this weekend but with the cold temperatures I am questioning if I should plant this weekend or wait.
It is already late in the season but I have had germination problems from soil temperatures in the past. Temps like this explains why allot of farmers in the north don't use no-till. In my situation I have corn stalks and rye on my fields so I am thinking the soil is pretty cold.

I was just busy with my neighbor/ renter and he said the stalks from corn plots hinder the soil drying out process by a lot.

I'm up in Marshall Co. MN. No field work and no planting for me. Pretty sure it will be a couple of weeks. Not sure I'd even try and take 4 wheeler across fields. Lots of standing water. I only know of one farmer doing anything, his land is tiled, he even had to stop, 1 inch rain yesterday and last night.

Lows of 33-36 next two mornings
