Last year, Ryan from Blue Hill Wildlife Nursery mentioned that some of his dolgo rootstock had some red in the heartwood. This year, he saved some for me. He said he would find one in about every 250 seedling rootstock. Last year, he seemed to see more. He sent me 20 of them and I put them on my best soil. Then added some root gel and got it done.

I only had 16 cages back there, so I doubled four cages with two rootstock. (Stu, you might remember this location where we jumped a big bodied deer) I don’t know what type of 🍎 I will end up with. Maybe only red splendor type crabs, maybe a dolgo sized fruit with more intense berry or cherry flavor. Maybe even a nice apple crab with pink to red flesh. This should be a good testing ground for CAR. Those with CAR will be topworked in another year.

All of the seedlings are alive and showing bronze leaf color. I thumb pruned them to a single leader.

That’s one fancy cage contraption you have there Dr. I think you should introduce yourself as Dr Sandbur all the time. And you should insist that people call you Dr.

I am impressed with the cage though. It looks meticulously prepared.

I got over to check on these trees and to water them. All are alive. There are miles of ditch that drain into this pond. The pond is so low that I dug a hole in the bottom, so I could dip water for the trees. i did this in another pond yesterday. Deer and coons are all ready using my two square foot dug out.

I got over there today and gave each tree about 1.5 gallons of water. I have to haul it in and can only access it at certain times because of the neighbors irrigation rig. I can no longer reach any water from the pond.

I watered these for the third time today. Some have reached 36 inches or more in height.

These are two, open pollinated Kinderkrisp seedlings where I selected for bronze leaves. I hope I am around long enough to see and taste the apples.
