That is not normal. Looks to be a sow with cub and a yearling. Strange.

Maybe it's the lighting on the picture, but that sow appears to have a little chocolate coloring to its coat. Cool picture.

My daughter nearly hit a bear on I35 South of Duluth last night. She called me afterward and was pretty riled up. She was Northbound and they crossed from East to west, two of them. She says she had to brake aggressively to miss them and only missed by a couple feet.

2024 proposed quota and licenses in Wisconsin for bear. Ben it might be harder for you to get a bear tag this year. They are cutting license tags by a 1000 in Zone D.

It will be interesting to see how that impacts the wait time. We went from waiting 8 years before to drawing every other year recently. There are still tons of bears, but the stupid dnr traps them out a week or two before opener. Hopefully the lower kill will tell the dnr to quit trapping so many bears right before the season opens.
My dad and son should draw tags this fall unless the preference point requirement changes dramatically.

With a 1000 less tags being given out, I would think it is going to add 1 to 2 years more waiting to get a tag in Zone D.

My dad drew a bear tag for my place. He last hunted only 2 years ago, so the preference points required hasn’t changed much yet in zone D.
I haven’t checked my sons application yet, but he had 5 points so I know he will draw. I just hope the stupid dnr doesn’t trap them all out because of ag damage like they did last year.
I’m apparently now on the no reply list with the guy in charge of the bear trapping program. We don’t see eye to eye on the dnr’s plan to pay trappers to trap out all bears just before the start of the bear season.

Someone close to you must be claiming crop damage as that is the only way that they will trap bear. Unfortunately the crop damage to corn happens just before bear season. We had several baits were that happens. Not much you can do.

Bear hunting on my land is either world class or horrible and it is all based on the neighborhood dnr trapping. In the heavy ag damage areas they should start the bear season early to allow hunters to kill the bears before they cause crop damage. Or start a spring season so we can kill the bears before they cause damage. It makes no sense to pay trappers to trap bears that hunters will pay to shoot. But the dnr sees things differently.

Unless things have changed, I believe it is federal trappers that do the bear trapping. The federal trappers get paid a salary and they get paid no matter what.

I’ve got a bear hanging around my farm in Pope County (close to Villard) which is rare. I’ve never seen one in this area.
