They’ve supposedly found EHD in western Vermont for the first time this year. I hear it is bad here for first time too. The property I have permission to hunt for 1 year only found a giant buck they had been hunting for a couple years dead in the stream. DEC came out and confirmed it was EHD. I have heard from two other people in different parts of state that it is bad.

I thought it occurred mainly in droughts?

We have EHD outbreaks fairly often in my region. Not fun to think about for a habitat guy. I build my deer ponds with straight up and down walls (no beaches) and line with rocks and gravel. This minimizes the environment that midges need, but there always seems to be natural habitat for the the little guys. I learned a couple of years ago that brain abscesses kill a lot of deer and it's often mistakenly identified as EHD since it's mostly bucks and they end up in water too.

When I was looking for my buck last fall that I shot in Iowa. We lost the trail and called the neighbor who has a tracking dog. Long story short, the tracking dog found 2 dead bucks (dead since like Sept/Oct) while tracking my buck. We found my buck the next morning.
It didn't really occur to me, but they may have died from EHD last year. Sounds like there were a few dead deer in the area from EHD in 2020. Hopefully, they acquire immunity over time.

You might want to watch trail cam pictures for deer with very long toes. Perhaps an unusual gait on live deer that effects both left and right side or a growth line In the hoof of a deer kill. These things can indicate a previous illness that they recovered from. I hear it is common after EHD.

The long toes thing is common here.

You want bucks like this coming in the daylight to your little pond or water hole, throw a bag or two of rock salt in it and if legal, put your salt lick next to it.

When you say rock salt, are you talking about something similar or the same as the rock salt crystals you put in a water softener? Or is it something else?

We have a small seep that comes out of the side of the hill in Minnesota (Swift County)! We took a half hour and dug out a small area so water will hold there year round. I know shovels really ?? We will get a Bobcat in there eventually, but it will do for now !

Before you know it, you’re gonna have an excavator and dozer there making a dam and fish pond!

We will get a Bobcat in there eventually, but it will do for now ! I tried that but my soil wouldn’t hold the water. I would say maybe 10% success as it held just a bit more water.
