I found two small 3’ wild apples along a trail last Sunday. They must’ve grown from seeds dropped by bear or deer? The nearest apple trees are wild and at least 200 yards away. I may dig them up this spring and transplant them closer to the other wild trees.

Originally, I had planned to do what you say...dig them up and move them where I want them. As I've found more and more, I've decided to let them grow where they are planted. I do try to clear around them as much as is possible. At the least I give them good southern exposure.

I normally leave them alone as well but, these two are right on the edge of an atv trail ( that isn’t used very often) but, it’s within 20 yards of a side boundary. I’d rather have them growing a little further on the interiors the property. I’ll try digging one up. If it goes ok then I will dig up the other as well.

I’ll take a few pictures this summer. I’m just guessing but a couple should take off this summer and have decent fruit.

My fall planting of seeds were from known varieties. I've been thinking I should save some seeds from my pear trees. I wouldn't mind having some "wild" pear trees scattered through the woods.

What I like about them is you can tube them for a year or two . Then cut back the tube and cage the tree. I have one that has to be 12 feet tall now and it had 2 apples on it. Unfortunately I did not take a picture, or if I did I deleted it. This is all from the plugs. They shoot up pretty fast.
I had one in sand soil.. that had 8-9 apples on it, but small . But it’s been hardy in poor soil.

My neighbor checked my Plum & wild Apple in Iowa. So far all survived. It’s early, but the timing on rains have been good for trees.

The common wild apple and ussurian pears I have in tubes are growing like weeds.

None of the 5 wild apple plugs from U of ID are out of their 5' tubes, but they are all within a foot or less of getting there. I'm going to leave them tubed for the winter and hope for the best. I don't know if I'll let these go and see what they produce, or if I'll graft them to a known variety.

My neighbor in Iowa said some of the wild apple are out of the 5 foot tubes in Iowa. He didn’t believe me when I said I expect a few to pop out of the tubes by September.
It’s been dry as of late, but they just had a couple 1/2 inch rains in the past few days! Thank goodness!

Temps and moisture are looking pretty good for Minnesota. Rain expected this weekend!

Pics of apples from common wild apple. Really varies on each tree. Genetic diversity insures the survival of a species. It is nice to see that not all of the common wild apples end up with a fruit resembling an antonovka.
