I checked on the 5 wild apple plugs I planted this spring yesterday. 3 of 5 are out of their 5' tubes. Pretty impressive growth. I hope they survive winter.

I lost a couple trees this year, and will plan to fill those spots with something next year. I checked prices at a couple places for Antonovka rootstocks + shipping. I can get wild apple plugs from U of ID for less, so I may just order 5-10 and plant the extras in the woods somewhere.
I should probably just start some seeds from my own trees and wait a year, that'd be the cheapest option...

I think almost every one I planted in Iowa this year survived, and popped out of the tube. They had a pretty intense drought there. Tough trees!

They are very easy as well. I would think a young guy with a new farm could really do some great things with common wild apple. A five row tree planting as a travel corridor, with common wild apple, crabapple and plum mixed in. Deadly long term!

I've planted a handful of them for future (maybe) pear rootstocks. I may just let them go instead.

Reminds me to order some . I usually get 10 and then another 10 oak (Bur Oak) might try some Bur Gambel as well this year .

I'm guessing they'd be pretty much like every other hybrid poplar. I've been planting 10 of their rugosa rose plugs every year for a few years now, but they're already sold out.

I don't remember U of ID selling out of stuff this quickly before. geez...they're sold out of a number of evergreens already too. I ordered 5 each of Scotch, Austrian, and Ponderosa pine and 5 common wild apple plugs. $23 shipping. Shipping from Burnt Ridge for a few apple rootstocks would have been higher.

Just got back from Iowa last evening. Here is a pic of the common wild apple I planted this spring as a 10 inch plug. My neighbor Fred has helped with weed control . He’s 6 feet tall … so this plug is now 7 feet tall !!

IA's longer growing season obviously gives an advantage over central MN. I wonder how far south those plugs would do well?

Saving seeds from them and growing them out may be a waste of time, but if I could get a seedling similar to Tolman I'd sure be happy. Think I'll save what seeds I can get from them this year. Next spring I'll plant them in some styrofoam plug flats I still have from the old NCR and see what happens.

At age 68, I decided to plant no apple seeds this fall. I have 5 or 6 seedlings to move out of the garden in the spring from last falls seed planting. I probably shouldn’t plant any more apple trees either. I have one rootstock crab in a pot to plant and will probably take it up north.

Then probably forget about them next spring I want to keep a few Smitty's seeds too. I was just cleaning/organizing my shed. God, what a mess down there. I did find my old styro flats, so I've got them ready for spring (anybody want one? I have 3). If I get any decent growers out of the seeds, I'll probably plant them out next fall, tube them, and see what happens. I won't be buying any more fruit trees that somebody else has grafted/grown.

These trees were from seeds I planted last fall. I don’t think any trees are from the Smitty’s seedling.
