My oldest purchased tree, chestnut crab, throws root suckers. I dug and potted one that was in the foreground at seven paces from the tree. This rootstock has a 1/2 inch crab that resembles dolgo.

I've used a number of root suckers from the crab I call "Wild Red". With any luck, free roostocks will be the only rootstocks I'm grafting to from now on.

This is a wild plum rootstock that throws suckers. I clipped the roots around it with a shovel and put a tree tube contraption over it. It is close enough to the garden that I can water it and move it later. I have a spot sprayed for a future plum thicket down by the swamp. It is nine paces from the mother tree.
