How can you tell when oat seeds are mature and will make viable seed? My crp contract has an oat nurse crop that has seed heads that are turning color now. I'm required to cut the field this year so I'd like to cut it when the oat seeds can grow into oats that may produce seed for the critters this fall.
So I want the oat seeds to grow, But I don't want to wait too long and let the weeds produce any seed. I'll include a picture. Any advice us appreciated.

Don't bet the farm on this, but my understanding is they are ready when they readily release from the stalk, like when you rub them between your fingers. I've been rubbing my barley every time I'm up, and some releases pretty easy, and some doesn't. I think the shit that doesn't may have died before it got to the finish line.
