He hauled ass into the nearest corn on full overdrive. He looked like Secretariat galloping.

Looks like a good spot for a big buck to bed. Until he gets spooked anyway!
Add an acre of shrubs and trees and I bet that will become more common. That's cool you have a big one around.

I have seen many a great buck in SD while pheasant hunting in small cover areas.
Walking a lowland grass spot, I heard noise behind me(ear plugs in), only to turn around and see a 150 class buck that I walked within 10 ft of that jumped up and ran off behind me.
Edit... and thinking more on that..... we had 4 or 5 dogs on that hunt.... I never thought of that till now.

I had a client who once had a Mn record bow kill.
His advice was to look for those isolated spots out in the fields, sometimes an abandoned homestead or similar.

Years ago we would bump big bucks out of areas like that while pheasant hunting.

Years ago we would bump big bucks out of areas like that while pheasant hunting. I suspect that is/was more true in the shotgun zones and in the days before the improvements in shotguns/scopes/slugs.

I see deer in waterways like that here...especially when the wind is coming from the high ground and the deer can see the down wind low ground or they are using the thermals to their advantage as well. Toss in some brush for some shade/cover and the air circulation helps them stay safe and the bugs away. I see this in areas of mature woods as well...where the air will circulate.... Also in waterways some will actually hold a little water as well. Deer ain't stupid....they want to stay cool in this heat and escape the bugs if possible as well.

Over 20 years ago, we were driving around the northwoods and drove over a bridge on a hot July evening. I had to turn around and look again. A forkhorn buck was in the waterhole below the bridge with just his head out. He got out and ran away. Not injured, but just cooling off.

Big bucks like isolation and spots where humans don’t ever (typically) go. Add in a huge sight and smell advantage, and you’ve got a great buck spot. Good luck getting close enough to that deer to kill him. If you know exactly where he beds and on what wind and you can try to sneak close on a crosswind, but it’s always going to be tough, they are good at surviving.
