K-Meow took a nice antelope. Is our whole board still open for first deer/goat/bear of the season? She fucked up on a monster whitetail tonight from the sounds of it. Using one of them stupid tree saddles and couldn’t get turned around in time. Damn thing was at 10 yards. Get back on the Gram to follow her.

Buddy stuck a good ten tonight at the farm In mn. He killed a good buck last year out of the same stand. Waiting til morning to go look. Said it laid down in the swamp 100 yards away, got up walked around and laid back down. Sounds gut shot. See in the morning.

Honest question since I’ve never bow hunted. Does the meat get gross when it lays for 12 hours or so with its guts inside?
Elmer Fudd never has to wait it out overnight.

It's not going to get down to 50 here tonight. That deer won’t die for awhile most likely. That will factor in. Meaning it might not die till 3-5am. Maybe longer. It might not be laying that long dead.

It can but it’s rarely a problem. The only deer I lost to spoilage the coyotes ate overnight. I killed a buck in early October one year. It was probably 70s down to 50s. I stopped trailing about 30 yards before he died. I was sure that deer would be spoiled but it was fine. It was not gut shot either. I suspect that deer was dead before dark. The nose knows.

Wise words. Tons of variables. But meat spoilage is often over emphasized.

We use the smell test as well and most of the time the meat is still good. The gut cavity can stink pretty bad even in fresh gut shots, but it doesn't always harm the meat.
If a chunk of meat smells like fresh venison it is ready for the freezer. If it stinks, it is crow food.

Risk you take bow hunting early. You can bump the deer and keep bumping it until you can’t find it or any blood so you for sure never get a chance to eat it or you can leave it overnight taking the chance it’s dead by the next morning with a better chance to recover it and eat it. Million dollar question no one will ever know the best outcome on each early shot deer. And what helps is it’s 45 degrees at home as I write this. He’s ok if he finds it right away this morning.

I have eaten some of those deer left overnight and I would say 2/3 are not worth the effort to dress out and butcher.
Probably it is like Stu says, it depends on when they died.
This is why I don’t bow hunt in warm weather. I have also deliberately hung my bow on a limb at prime time in the evening so I am less likely to get a shot. I also have not hunted evenings when I have to go to work in the morning.
As you can tell, I am far less enthusiastic about bow hunting as compared to 25 years ago. Rifle hunting is my preferred time to kill a deer.

Rifle hunting is my preferred time to kill a deer. There have also been warm spells in rifle season when my wife and I have chosen not to fill a tag, waiting for cooler weather. I have one observation type stand where I often go to it without a bow. Yup, one might walk down the wooded fence line and by me, but chances are slim. And sitting in this stand does not hinder my prime spots. It might even make them better.
