I toured my place last week with my cousin who used to hunt it. He was impressed and I must admit that gave me joy. Plots opened up strategies that he never considered. Chainsaw work motivated him to do the same on his place. Grafting was all new to him. I prefer the hunt over the work but that tour was good for us both. I love sitting in a stand with my daughter more than anything. Those days get fewer each season. I love a morning hunt as the woods wake up and you never know what might cruise by. Habitat wise grafting has become a new and strongest passion. Most of my success is with persimmon but I am determined to create more apples. I check my grafts every visit to how they are. Most of all, I love being away from the city whether it’s hunting or habitat season. I have been blessed to live in the country for over 35 years and only 4.5 years in a true city. Several years in a small town after the city. I was out this morning in my pj’s and leaving the dog out of the kennel. The dog and I can both take a piss. I was thinking how it would be in a city.

When I think about living in a more populated area I really wonder if I could maintain my sanity. I don't think I'm cut out to have neighbors all the way around me, day after day, year after year.

The biggest thing for me is just getting out of town and into some peace and quiet. I enjoy the cause and effect of habitat improvement. I think I most enjoy challenging every ounce of conventional wisdom out there. I know we give each other a lot of shit, and I enjoy that too. For a long time I've had a core goal to do as little as possible while driving up the outputs of my improvements to their max potential, among all methods. Not a big fan of buying stuff and extra chores.

I think the most fun I have and best enjoyment I get from this habitat stuff is taking people out for hunts they can't make happen themselves. Already have several limits of doves shot by people who've never been dove hunting this yr. Side note; shot my limit this morning with 18 shells (2 misses and 1 cripple that I didn't find). Last limit took 17. I'm 30 for 35 in the last 2 hunts.

Sometimes three or four fly across my driveway.

Sometimes three or four fly across my driveway. It's kind of weird. I keep a close eye on doves throughout the summer and fall in my travels and working outside. Don't usually see many in the area, but head out to my dad's and it's like the county should be covered with them.

My favorite thing is creating plots in a region where plots don’t exist and probably shouldn’t. I walked around today for a couple hours observing what the deer have been eating, how the apple trees flow from area to the next, trails they take to and from, it was all pretty cool. Next year will be a maintenance year, pushing back the edges and all the piles I have accumulated over the last 8 years.

I like the strategic part of setting up a farm the best. Locating the best stand locations, best spots for plots, how to access stand locations, watching mock scrapes get used, creating travel corridors, etc.
One of my favorite wins was the evening before gun season in 2015 when a target buck started down a travel corridor I created that winter. He ended up winding or seeing but 1 hour later another target came down the other corridor that lead to the stand and ended up on my wall.

End results are my favorite part, either hunting or habitat work. A trail that was once nothing but mud, a lush green plot or meat in the freezer.

Individual task I enjoy the most is running the chainsaw and resetting sections of the woods. Overall just enjoy seeing the wildlife use the different features that I have created or improved.

I used to have somewhere where I did habitat improvements, that was rewarding, just gave me something to look forward to wait 2 weeks and see a tree I planted wake up or a plot I planted make the green haze. This year it'll be very rewarding to fill my tags on public ground, I have to hunt the people nowadays, so much to learn. I have to learn to not get upset if people ruin my opening day of rifle hunt but walking in after light or their in my blind or they sit 10 yds from you. God help me.
