Was able to shoot a cow elk with My bow in Colorado. It was the first elk I saw while hunting after 4 days. I ended up “spining” her unfortunately 30 yards away. Had to finish her off with another. Went back down to the same area for fun a few days later and watched two separate bears eat off the carcus. Not sure why they weren’t frequenting the area like they normally do so I feel lucky to come home with meat. My old man is still out there giving it hell.

Nice work, always a great feeling when you have success in such a beautiful area. She will eat well, congrats!

Did you hunt otc? Was there a bunch of other hunters? This was a limited entry area but a very small number of points needed. We normally see more hunters. We did have one hunter come into our set opening morning. A lot of atv traffic on the road we truck camp on but a little lighter this year. That being said 5 trucks drove past my dads camp tonight and set up camp 150 yards down the trail. That’s a lot of pressure coming tomorrow when muzzy season opens. Maybe it will help him as it will push elk around.

That's awesome. Did you call her in or spot and stalk her?

That's awesome. Did you call her in or spot and stalk her? We actually hunt them like whitetails early in the season like that. Ambush a bench on a north facing slope where they typically frequent. I actually had thrown out some cow calls about an hour prior to shooting her. Not sure if that drew her in or not.

Congrats DD. I’m glad you were successful, came home with meat, and had time with your dad. Those will be important down the road.

Very cool guy! Congrats! Any fancy plans for the meat? Negatory. Back straps into steaks and literally ground the rest. Split 1/2 with my buddy who was with as well who didn’t shoot anything. That was the pre-determined plan.

Congrats DD. I’m glad you were successful, came home with meat, and had time with your dad. Those will be important down the road. You bet. My dad is 71 and still killing it in the mountains. Spends hours a day staying in shape so he can still enjoy it. I keep telling myself and my wife I probably have 8-9 more opening days in the mountains with him. (He’d probably still come to camp if he’s physically unable to hunt)

WTG DD ! I'm trying to set up a cow elk ranch hunt yet this year....for New Mexico. Gonna take some family and a few friends if we are not to late to put a plan in place. Just a fun meat hunt....and a good introduction to hunting the west and mountains for my favorite game animal. If it cannot work this year....I'm going to work on next year.
Lots of fun hunting with family! Memries are made.
