$20,000 in a 30 day month is 666 per night. That is going to have to be some outstanding and crazy voodoo type Cuban bikini beach party to go that route! You'all have to be living right to survive that shit in old age!

We're about 150' walk from the beach in this shack. To rent a place with direct access/frontage on the beach you're looking at a minimum of $15K a month. Off season you could probably do it for a little over half that amount. We could have rented this place for around $8K a month this year, but are only doing 2 weeks. Next year this place is already booked through March and the price went up around $2K a month. We could find a nice home with a pool on a canal inland a few miles for $5-7K a month I'd imagine. My wife wants to be at the beach all the time. I don't want to drive through the beach traffic daily, and sit at the public beach with the "unwashed masses". We walked about 2 miles of beach this morning one way. The only area with any amount of people was the public beach. $20k for a month. Lol. I’d crank up the heat at home and hire somebody to do your plowing for the winter. Order some Maine lobsters and shrimp once a week and you’d be ahead of the game. My brother’s MIL survived the 150 mph winds of Ian and wants out. She’s seen enough of the Florida weather so she’s heading north. I know that last storm scared the shit out of her. No Gulf of Mexico at home. No 80 degree days at home in the dead of winter. No fresh grouper sandwiches at home. No hurricanes in FL in the winter either. I'm sure there's some folks heading back to the northeast after Ian, but it appears there's two more headed this way for every one headed back up there. We won't be spending $20K for a month of vacation, but $20K for two months may be possible at some point. We could either tie up $350-$400K in a vacation home (well inland) or spend the interest on that amount on vacationing instead. We'll never own here, but it sure beats the hell out of staring at a white expanse for half the year.

Not even close Here's a place for $850-$950/night www.floridarentalbyowners.com/listing/2502Most places in this general area go for $1500-$2500/week. Many of those places get booked December-April well over a year out. Property management companies give the current renters the right of first refusal for the following year, so you need somebody to die or "age out" of vacationing. VRBO's get booked out well in advance too. The $20K range places are the ones that a person could currently book for next year, that was my only point about bringing up that amount.

Understood The $20K number reminded me of the last time we stayed at an inclusive resort in Jamaica. The resort had just completed some "huts" off shore a couple hundred yards on small islands. You got your own "servants" for however long you stayed. They'd bring out food/drinks/whatever, take your laundry/trash back to the mainland, etc. etc. etc. The price for one of those units was $20K A WEEK and that was 6 or 7 years ago. They were booked out a year in advance. There's lots of money out there just waiting to be spent...

Jet skis, those big ones designed for 2-3 people. You got your own smaller jet ski so you could go back and forth to the mainland when you wanted. I've wondered how those units have held up to the last few hurricanes. I'm guessing at least some of them got washed out to sea.

I guess it's sort of like when we go to the lake and hit the party coves; tie the boat off onto another boat, drink, wave down the cute girl from the marina as she idles by on the jetski and have her bring another case of beer and a pizza to us on her next trip around. Sounds exactly the same! I bet those huts turn to beach trash pretty easily, but are easy to rebuilt too.

I remember another trip to Jamaica with my late wife. Our plane had an issue and the airline had to put everybody up in hotels for the night. We ended up at a Hilton outside of Montego Bay because everywhere else was full. It was full of folks like you see on TV. Sheiks, people with huge gold watches and diamond jewelry, "beautiful people" everywhere. We got a voucher for $100 for supper. That wasn't enough to cover the bill. I had a burger, my wife had a pasta dish, and we each had A drink. We looked up how much a night was at that place when we got home (this was '07 or '08)....a cheap room was $900/night. The upper floors (the entire suites) were going for tens of thousands a night. There's a world out there that most of us never even know exists.

It would be fun to hang out with someone with that kind of money for a week or so. Just shadow them for a while. I teach and coach some kids who's family likely think that of us. To them the luxuries of lower middle class are inconceivable.

Yup I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to sit my fat ass on the beach for a couple weeks.

Call me stupid but, I’d still rather have 100 acres of hunting land and keep $1,500,000.

I learned a long time ago not to criticize others until I’ve walked 10 miles in their shoes though so I think do what makes you happy. I’ve learned that life is too short not to be happy.
