I've been gun shy to go hunt my best spots if I don't have a definite wind to keep my scent going where it needs to go. The winds have been almost non-existent this month, or outright bad (like 2 days of light east winds this weekend). The days are going by, and I haven't had a decent wind to go hunt my north plot blind. I've got 4 nights left to bowhunt before rifle, and the forecast doesn't look like I'll get a single good day to hunt back there.
How do you deal with this? Just don't go, or say f-the police and try it anyway?

For halloween weekend, I'll take WNW if it's reliable. It's ain't perfect, but it's always worked as long as it isn't swirling. That monday rain/snow/wind forecast looks like an exciting afternoon to be in the woods.

Is rifle season a big deal, worth taking a chance to beat the crowd? I personally don't like risking blowing a spot, but I also don't give a shit if I shoot a deer every yr or not. It's up to you. Try it and bail if it doesn't make you happy.

Try it and bail if it doesn't make you happy. Rifle isn't a big deal for me. I like the two weeks before with the bow. I do enjoy having all the guys up at camp, but the chaos in the neighborhood is less than fun. I try very hard to preserve the surprise factor on my place so the guys get a good opening morning with natural deer movement. I don't want the deer knowing they're being watched if it's just me here. I've got enough spots to hunt I don't need to push it. However, one thing I'm learning, is that there is more pressure on the public land around me than I realized. I never hunted it, so I never knew. The public ground is full of people either rifle hunting deer this weekend, grouse, putting up stands, or sighting in guns. Any natural patterns I had figured for bow have been blown to bits. There are people running all over everything I wanted to hunt. I'm afraid that will continue each year as soon as it gets cool enough to bowhunt.

Preserve your spots for your buddies and hunt tue public around you. Pattern the other guys and set up on escape routes. You have food and cover, might as well be a sanctuary also if it's not a big deal for you personally hunt your place right now.

I think a song by Ricky Nelson says it best: " .......you can't please everyone.....so may as well please yourself." I think we all can get wrapped up in trying to make the best situation for our freinds and family.....and many times it will not make a bit of difference on what we do. If you like what your got going.....then go for it....and let the chips fall where they may. My 2 cents. You cannot orchestrate the whole affair no matter how hard you try.....ask me how I know these things....

Calm winds suck. Deer don't move well and pooling scent is a problem. You have a Banks blind though right? That will contain your scent so if you can get in there without boogering anything up go for it.

The above are reasons to hunt public lands with as near to ‘no trace’ as possible. Don’t put a ladder stand back there, don’t make a four wheeler track, Hunt the thickest shit you can find and either just sit on a stool or carry a very lightweight stand in there. Maybe even consider not hunting the public land during the first 3 days of season and also skip the second Saturday. I had some enjoyable hunts when doing this on public lands about 40 miles NE of you.

I'm going to toss out the spots I thought I had figured this year, and rethink it next season. Object number 1 will be to find places very far away from trails. Seems like if I can get away from the easy corridors for the 4x4 crowd, I'd have a much better chance of peace and quiet.

A pair of waders can get you into some ignored spots or a canoe if their isn’t ice on the water. Duck hunters can screw some things up for water routes. I used to have two stands where I waded small creeks for approach.

That will contain your scent so if you can get in there without boogering anything up go for it. I've got one. It's worked very well for Omaha Steve when winds weren't great. He hunted all last season in it and never got winded, and there were days I didn't think it'd work. He had deer in front of him every sit. I hope that's not the only solution and this season has just been a run of bad luck as far as winds go. I'm going to shift my hunt schedule a little next year as well. Instead of taking 5 day hunt chunks like this every other week, I will probably do 3 4-day weekends in a row. I'd take friday and a half day thursday off the last three weeks leading up to rifle. That should hedge my bets better against the wind.

I second nose jammer. I shower with the soap, use the deodorant. Keep my cloths in a tub that has last years deodorant stick (open) in it and also spray some into the tub before putting the lid on. Spray the truck bed before I put eq. in (I have a tonneau cover). Spray boot and rub deodorant stick on boot b4 walking in. Give a shot of spray once in the stand.

I hunt in the hills. I getting swirling thermals even when their calling for a certain wind. I would take a chance and hunt my best spot if gun season was approaching. But since it’s still a month + away, I’m leaving my best spots sit until things are more perfect.

(sorry if it's taboo to post another forum.) It's a forum mostly on hunting public land. You've got some decent ideas already, including factoring in other people as a part of your hunt.
