At what point does it become too late to trim?
When is the next timeframe to safely trim trees again?
Thanks in advance. Coop

I'd think you'd be pushing it down there. Are buds swelling yet?

Some trees showed the very beginning of bud swell, while others still appeared dormant. I was hoping to finish this weekend, but I know I'm probably too late.
I'm prepared to wait if need be.
Do you or anybody else do summer pruning?

I do some summer pruning of water sprouts. I've also done summer pruning on trees where I want to control their ultimate size. Generally, summer pruning limits the size of a tree while dormant pruning encourages a tree to put on more woody growth.

Just curious where "there" is Coop. You should put your location in so we can see it. At least the state.

Of the 30 trees I pruned last weekend, only one had any bud swell at all.
Coop,
How old are your trees? Any dead wood or rubbing branches can be taken now. My wife's uncle has said most in the north can prune in any month with an R in it.

My farm is in the SE corner of MN, 4b. "How old are your trees? Any dead wood or rubbing branches can be taken now. My wife's uncle has said most in the north can prune in any month with an R in it." NH - I have 20-25 old "wild" trees, I've trimmed some, others I've only released. I have 40 trees entering their 4th growing season, 25 entering their 2nd or 3rd. I'll take a few pictures of the wild trees this year and share them with you guys. There are two the deer show clear preference for. Both of them show incredible disease resistance as well.

If you ask an old orchardist, I think you'll hear that it's okay to do some light pruning any time you're there and have a pruner in your hands. I'd definitely avoid pruning from the time trees wake up in the spring until after they're done blooming.

My Dad had a different rule for months with an R in them. Deer were targets in any month with an R and that included Argust.
My Dad, Uncle, and Grandparents survived the '30's on venison. they would shoot a deer and split it up between 3 or 4 families.

My grandmother cooked a lot of venison too but, she also cooked woodchuck and other critters that turned into venison at the dinner table. Times were tough back then.
