We had a few year that a second "left over" buck tag was available. People shot a nice younger buck just so they could get a set of antlers for the garage then spent the rest of the season chasing big bucks. I don't think it resulted in more bucks being shot overall, but it certainly lowered peoples standards and made for a higher percentage of good genetic young bucks being shot. I wouldn't want to see 2 buck tags come back.

I didn’t mean add 2 bucks … that would be ridiculous ! Just start season later and we’d have more age . If anything Mn should have lottery buck tags in some areas.

If the MN DNR doesn't somehow fuck me over, I expect that my buck hunting here will be better than I ever had on my old place in WI. It's already superior to what I had on my folks' old place there.
I just keep plugging away and hoping most of the neighbors continue to pass young bucks. If my evergreen tree plantings ever turn into what I want them to be, this place is going to be pretty darn good.

If your folks old place is anything like our river bottom place, that's not a very high bar. Plenty of deer and the occasional nice buck but in 3 years I've already shot 2 of my biggest 3 on our hills place. Versus 23 years of hunting in the river bottoms. I can't get over the difference in antler mass between the two places, on deer that are likely the same age. It's easily apparent.

The folks' old place was/is worse for large antlered buck hunting than your river bottom place Yes, antler mass is always amazingly different from areas with good/decent soil vs. light/sandy/infertile soils. They do take some dandies on light soil in central WI, but those bucks generally come from areas where farmers are liming/fertilizing/building up soils with manure. From areas with no ag and the dominant trees are jackpine and black oak...antler mass sucks.

Planting conifers is a real key. I can't tell you how many guys I know in MN that shoot nice bucks and they always say 'they came out of the pines" even though they may actually be spruce, most guys don't know the difference.
I have some good bucks laying low in my spruce plantings right now. But I am tagged out!

I have some good bucks laying low in my spruce plantings right now. But I am tagged out! There are always young guys in our neighborhood struggling to find a place to hunt. However, their grandfathers and father ditched everything and continued to cut the meadows up to the ditch. Plant some spruce, and leave some willows grow and they would have deer.

Amazes me that farmers in my area that are actually avid hunters, don’t leave like 10 acres of cover for deer ? Switchgrass and conifers and —-a food plot ? …they’d have a great spot to put a blind ?
But they can’t give up any crop land. Makes me laugh.

The neighbors that rent for me do that, but so many others won’t do it.
Property tax structure did lead to some conversion of woodlands to crops.
