The buck that my wife shot was straight down wind. Opened the window and shot him. Never new we were there.

This morning I’m on the ridge top Mr Browtines came from on his way to busting me last Saturday.
SE wind 1-3 mph which blows from bedding to me then over a steep bank. Deer can walk the steep but tend not to. It should be perfect. By 7:30 the wind has blown 360 degrees though most of the time it is SE. Too many encounters this year the swirl has come at the exact wrong time. Even my nearly bullet proof plans fall apart. I guess the good thing is it helps with buck age structure.

Weather channel app says SE wind which is mostly correct.
OnX says NW wind. WTF?

You just described one of the reasons I tend to hunt from the ground. I'll move spots as the morning goes to adjust for wind changes. Sometimes it's 10yds, sometimes it's 100. I can't count how many times I've watched deer go directly downwind of where I was just at. Good luck to you this morning and keep us posted.

This has been my first year using milkweed to see the wind. wow. The air certainly wasn't always doing what I had thought it would, and the affects of ground features and stand height were eye openers. Sometimes going lower would cause my scent to go high, and being high would cause my scent to crash to the ground, from the same tree.

Here's what it looks like on my home screen. To mirror on what caveman said; I like terrain to act as a ramp for my scent stream. Any time scent "falls" is bad in my opinion.

Dad had one very old school and sketchy climber. We both bowhunted a lot from the ground. My first bow kill was from the ground and I managed 1 other in my lifetime. I blew a lot of opportunities from the ground. I don’t know how you consistently do it. I bought a summit climber when I was about 25 and rarely hunted from the ground since then except for portable blinds on plots. Land ownership brought hang on and ladder stands. Each year I shift some of them based on experiences and studying wind There are certainly times a stand helps me with a bad wind. My second doe this year was down wind but close so it blew over her. It seems like a shift back to the ground wouldn’t up my chances of a mature buck.

I do get relatively close to yotes and bobcats from the ground fairly often. Could just be lucky.

Know plenty of people that travel to Kansas and shoot some monsters. How hard can it be out there?

I dropped to my knees, nocked an arrow and drew when it got to about 5 yards. It jumped off the trail broadside and stared. I don’t think I even saw my site pins. Hit her through both femoral. It was A LOT of luck. I was probably 12 or 13. The second was a forkie who had been sparing with another. As I was sneaking they turned and walked up to me. Shot him in the throat patch at about 5 yards. 99.9 % of the time I didn’t kill deer from the ground.

Now that we derailed your thread, I’m “circle back.” I think the Naked Gun figured out the best solution for you style of hunting.
