Last year I cut many aspen, let them fall. The worst year for bucks since 2005. Today I went in and cut many downed trees to make openings for bedding areas. After reading many articles, you need a path in and a different path out. Made about 10 different bedding areas. Will have to wait for any success. Anyone else have done the same?

Those downed aspen will most likely send up root sprouts all over this year that'll thicken things up and provide cover in a couple years.

I dropped all of the popples on two points this winter. It is a mess, but I plugged spruce in those areas last spring. Will see what happens.

Deer move all through the Godawful Mess I've got here. I believe that your buck sightings were down last year. I don't believe the downed aspen had anything to do with the reduced sightings.

I think you are on to something with making trails to get into the heavy cover. I was shed hunting this weekend, and one of my bedding areas has grown up almost too thick to even move in, and I found very little sign. The plan is to add entry and exit trails into the bedding cover.

Aspen clearcuts shine in years 3 - 12. If you just cut aspen and left the oak maple etc, it won't be near as good as a clearcut. Maybe only 25% as good.

Aspen that was cut 4 years ago is so thick with blackberry canes and other trees, it is hard to walk thru the area, but the deer will find a way. Where it is hard for me to get thru, the deer droppings tell me that they use it.
