What do you guys consider to be "normal" for tipping? What's the minimum you tip? Do you ever purposely tip a small amount to ensure a server knows you were unhappy?

I'll start since nobody else wants to.
My "normal" tip is 20%. I'll tip 10% when I get shitty service. I'll also tip a dollar when I want to make a point.

15% Is my regular tip. I rarely go under that unless there is bad behavior from the server.

Don't tip bad service.
Great tips for great service.
Possibly more considering conditions. I gave a girl a $5 tip at Sonic today on a $7 order, and all she had to do was bring the stuff out to the truck, but she did it well.

20% maybe a little more if things were great. 10 if it sucked.
I’d have to suspect spitting in my food to tip a buck.
I’ll add to the question. Do you tip on the total or the pre tax amount? I always tip total but my company insists on the pretax amount when it’s a business meal I’m expensing. Corporate is based in TN so the tax is 10% on everything in that state.

Tip on pretax. Tax is roughly 5% so 3x tax minimum unless it was shitty service.

Total.
I got a feeling I'm both a cheap ass and simple minded in this group. I tip in whole numbers. A $30 meal might get a $10 tip if I like the service. They get the 10 because a 5 isn't enough and I'm not going to break out quarters and 1's to figure it out. If the bill goes over a hundred I tell the wife to take care of the tip.

Getting people to show up for service jobs isn't easy. I do my best to try to make it worth the server's time for showing up. Maybe they figure out capitalism...maybe they don't.

I tip excessively if the service is good, and not at all if it sucks. I think sometimes I'll end up around 25%.

I don't have a rule of thumb, I always try to be kind even when I don't have a lot. Most of the time when its just me on a Saturday morning, I'll go to the local diner and spend $15 on a western omelet, some toast, & coffee. I tip like $7 or so.
I believe in sewing & reaping, most people aren't terrible servers in small towns.

I do a lot of 50-100% if the service is good. Especially around Christmas time. Yes I said Christmas, not Holiday time. It will always be Christmas.

I know one central Minnesota rancher who occasionally gave a waitress a $100 tip, even when he was eating alone. He was in his 80’s and would help out some struggling waitresses after he visited with them a bit.
This was often on trips of delivering bulls to South Dakota and other western states,
I have lots of respect for this man.
