My wife and I did our first legit garden this past spring at home. Been planting food plots and trees for a long time so when we moved to our new house we setup a garden the following spring. Did a raised lasagna bed with layers of horse shit, hay, leaves, and then dressed the top with mushroom compost. It's kind of a big U shape with a 4ft walkway in the middle. It's about 12x24 all together. Put heavy duty landscape fabric around the perimeter and chicken wire. I made a 7 strand electric fence set real low off the ground to keep varmints away. Unfortunately we dont live in the country so we had to make it work with the space we have. Spring we did peas, carrots, spinach, lettuce, then did beans, corn, potatoes, cucumbers and tomatoes. Finally before fall we did more peas, carrots, lettuce, spinach. Then we dressed the top with winter wheat to gold the soil til next year. Looks like the photos didnt come out in order but oh well

That looks like a great idea.
I have some raised beds for individual apple trees, but I may not have them high enough.

Some serious tonnage out of a relatively small area. Great job. I need to take control of our raised bed next year.

That's an impressive garden.
When I lived in town I would always plant some squash and pumpkins outside the main garden. The local rabbits never bothered them at all and as the fast growing squash and pumpkin vines expanded it gave me an excuse not to mow a good portion of my yard. I hated push mowing my old lawn.

We're going to start canning this year. Hopefully learn a thing or two about it before the garden is up and running

We're going to start canning this year. Hopefully learn a thing or two about it before the garden is up and running Do it. You'll come to love it quickly. I was out yesterday scouting for ash logs to make a border for a similar venture this upcoming season. I wanna build one of those, but go down about 4-5' and fill it with all my trash wood around the yard and then backfill it and throw some topsoil and half composted chips on top.

Serious critter control you've got there! And one hell of a nice garden. Did you mix any of the soil and straw, or just let the soil sit on top?

I got a little hippy buddy who does these things and told me about lasagna beds. Dude lives in Vermont and sells his produce. Its actually no soil. It's all in layers so it was Cardboard...logs...horse manure...leaves...straw...manure repeat those layers...then 2 or 3 pick up loads of mushroom compost on the top. Then straw just to keep the bed moist. But all the layers compost down and kept the bed nice and fluffy. The mushroom compost has no weed seed in it either and the layering smothers out weed seed too so very minimal weed issues

SD may have just had an orgasm reading your last post. Weeds are God's soil report card. Good crops as well.
