What do you northerners do to keep potted trees from dying in the winter I threw 20-30 potted hardwoods in the center of garden and buried them in leaves. Is that good or will the roots die from being above ground?

Is that good or will the roots die from being above ground? I've left trees out for the winter with no protection. They mostly survived but I had a few get clipped off by rabbits and rats. I wouldn't do it again with trees that I cared about. Would probably bury them somewhat well.

Is that good or will the roots die from being above ground? Maybe mound some dirt around them to provide a little more insulation. I left a Styrofoam block of pine plugs out over winter on the ground and probably half made it. Couldn't believe it.

I bury my potted trees to ground level in the garden.

If they can't make it on their own over Winter they don't belong here. That's my take on it.

I bury my potted trees to ground level in the garden. If you want them to live, this is the best practice.

Why not just bury them in their final spot? Plan on watering them for another summer? The reason I kept some potted trees over winter was because I wanted another year of babying them and getting them larger before planting, but if I have to dig a hole to keep them alive it's going to be in their forever spot.

I want to plant them in a ‘No Go ‘ spot. That’s an area I stay out of for 1-3 months before rifle season. The ground freezes up here during rifle season. I don’t want to go back there and water trees in the fall.

The way southern Ohio winters seem to go, I’d plant them after the January muzzy season. I doubt the ground will be frozen.

Is that good or will the roots die from being above ground? I have done that a few times and never had a problem. Voles is the only thing I would worry about.
