I keep a .22 by the door. Have killed several varmints with it (including several yotes). I practice with the .22 out to 300yds. But, that is too far for a quick shot at a dog with a reasonable expectation to hit. Most shots are within 150. Perfect for one of my .223's or .308 but they rattle the windows and require ear protection, not conductive for a door gun.
I've shot my mom's. 17hmr and love it. Think it would be perfect except for it's lack of knockdown power. Anybody have an alternative caliber suggestion? I plan on a long barrel bolt or lever gun.

Just did some reading on the .204 and it's reportedly about the same loudness as the .223. Too loud is a deal breaker.

The 22 magnum would likely give better knock down performance than the 17HMR.....no? I have both....but cannot remember the stat's. I used them for Prairie Dog shoots.....and the 17 did not have the punch of a 22Mag......IIRC.....yet shot a little longer range. Still.....they are similar. What about a Lever gun in 38 spill /357 mag ? A nice Henry or a Marlin are great house / home defense guns. (Cowboy assault rifles) Also a 410 shotgun can fire bird shot or slugs and buckshot. Marlin makes a dandy lever action shot gun....as well as a single shot. I use mine as a truck gun....and really like them. I have allot of fun shooting those guns and don't worry about hearing protection with them. HUH? .

www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/232240/70330/marlin-model-1895-.410-bore-lever-action-shotgunWatch a few YouTube video's on these guns. They are a bit speedy but will only go higher over time. Heirloom quality piece......you can pass on to mini cats. LOTS of fun to shoot and quite versatile for birds, pests, bunnies, yotes and maybe deer at short ranges. Iron sights are good to about 75 yards for me.....but a peep sight (SKINNER PEEPS) are good for longer ranges. Or I suppose you could put a scope atop the rifle (and ruin its utility). They are good on coyotes to maybe 150 yards?? I bought a variant (brass receiver) of the above this fall at Reeds in Walker (they also own Northern Guns and are a large mail order distributor of firearms). Hard to get one of these unless you shop a bit....but they are selling really strong now.

It's already bad enough, don't want to make it worse. I'll certainly look at the .22 mag. No interest in a shotgun or .38 for my 150yd yote gun though. Henry makes a cute little lever in .17. I bet they make a .22 mag also. Marlins are nice. My dad has an old .22 Marlin with a gold trigger. Very solid shooting gun!

Here's the only sure way to reduce decibels on any rifle. Once you go suppressed you'll never go back.

Here's the only sure way to reduce decibels on any rifle. Once you go suppressed you'll never go back. Sweet setup! I have strongly considered a suppressor! I've been reluctant to fill out the paper work, jump through their hoops, and spend the money. If I thought I could do it easy enough I would probably start the process tomorrow. With that said I don't really know where to begin or what all I would need.

I think my parents have both. Might need to do some comparison shooting. For every article that says a .17 isn't enough I can find one that says it is. Awfully hard to research stuff on the interwebs. I certainly like the trajectory of the .17 better than the .22 mag, but don't want critters crippling off.

It's worth it once you get one.

Wink, I never got into the details on suppressors (save for a bad experience with muzzle brakes - another story). I know allot of folks like them. Do they reduce velocity any?....and what about any loss in accuracy?? Seem so "unwieldy" to me. Still if its purpose is a house gun.......I suppose it would serve.

No loss of accuracy or velocity foggy. Only thing was a shift of impact down about 5 inches.

Back when I was researching on them quite a bit I read that they can increase accuracy via stabilization of exit gasses. Like wink said poi can change bit mostly they do good things. Damn it!
