First got pictures of this buck in 2019 when I'm guessing he was 4 year old but I had already tagged out in November The following year 2020 I tagged out Oct 6, and he showed up on Oct 16th as a now guessing 5 year old. I followed him throughout the remainder of 2020 by trail cams and kept close tabs on him.
2021-2022 season comes around and sure enough he shows up on Oct 13. Same time and place. I keep very low pressure and very thick cover on my property and lots of food. Roughly 10 acres of plots and plenty of shelled corn as baiting is legal and basically necessary in Ohio. The old phrase if you dont your neighbor will holds true so if anyone doesnt like that I bait suck it
We had 2 other 4 year old bucks on the property that were also shooters and would have taken them as well if the chance came up. Combined my woman and I hunted 17 times this year and had 3 run ins with thus buck alone.
On 01.22.22 I got to my tower blind that had not been hunted since November 13. Around 315 I had 14 does and a spike come out. By 400 that had turned into 22 does a spike and 2 fork bucks. The does meandered off to my south and cleared the field. The 2 forks and spike stayed and before long 3 more fork/year long bucks came out. Then 2 good looking 2 year olds I've been keeping tabs on came out. Then a shortly after this old brute came out.
He was about 80 yards when I first saw him and he closed the distance to 45 yards feeding through brassica winter wheat and broadcast corn. I took a slightly quartering shot with my crossbow that took out both lungs and clipped a piece of the liver. He went 50 yards and dropped dead. A quick clean deaty for this old monarch and a hunt that tops any I've had on my home farm. Late season hunting is truly phenomenal and all this land work is paying off. I felt like I was on a TV show with the number of deer and bucks seen and trophy taken yesterday. Truly feel blessed with how it all went down.
I have really started taking hunting mature bucks more seriously in the last couple years and I am developing a system to pattern these old bucks. I was hesitant to share the method until it payed off but will write up a post soon. Here are some pictures of the buck from this year and last year and of course some of him dead yesterday. I rough scored him around 140 23" main beams with a 21.5" tip to tip spread. He lost a brow tine in the last 2 weeks and actually shrunk a bit from last season but nonetheless a trophy in my book.
