After 2 years of poor results on my spring plantings…I’m looking at planting some trees in the fall instead. Not a bunch, but a few select locations. Has anyone fall planted recently, any negative results?

I've fall planted trees. Bury them, water, cage, walk away. We planted three trees at the church late last fall. We stop by and water them once every couple of weeks just to make sure they don't dry out, but they should be fine.

Has anyone fall planted recently, any negative results? I fall planted my grafts last year. Mainly because once I knew they "took" the drought had already begun. I've planted fruit trees in the fall before with good success. The issue with planting evergreens in the fall is finding a source.

Last year I saw some adds on Facebook Marketplace (I hate FB) but use that once in awhile. There were some nice size Black Hills Spruce for sale. I can’t remember the town it was in. I’ll be watching again.
My spring planted bare root apple trees all survived the drought . Gave them water just one time.

When I graft apple trees in the spring I plant them in pots, keep them watered all summer and plant them in the fall. That plan has worked really well for me the last several years.

I fall planted a few apple trees last fall. First time for me. I planted some replants many years ago, pine, spruce, maybe even tamarack they did well. I might try a few apple trees in the fall, why not?

I love tamaracks however with the drought last year we lost thousands that we had planted over the years. Oh well I guess more openings between the willows and spruce now.

We lost hardly any spruce surprisingly at least from the areas I checked. Will look more this spring.

I’ve found if spruce make it in year 1, they rarely die after. The last 2 years I have lost quite a few first yr plugs, just too dry!
