I was looking at the Chief River Nursery catalog and noticed they carry winterberry. There was a lot of winterberry growing near/on my folks' old place in lower areas. I haven't seen any in MN that I can think of, anybody here have them growing? Thinking about picking up a handful just for having a splash of color in the winter time.

I have some growing at my rusk county place, but I haven't seen much wildlife use. It does look nice and provides some shrub variety.

I agree that it doesn't get much wildlife use, at least not huntable wildlife. I do think many songbirds like the fruit in late winter/early spring. I'm guessing the soil here isn't acidic enough for it, that's probably why it doesn't grow naturally.

I saw some growing on some power lines here in NH last winter. The berries do stand out when there’s fresh snow. I think the songbirds eat them for sure.

Winterberry range per Welty Smith book. I found a similar pic somewhere, except the westward line ended in the middle of Todd County.

The cheapest I can find bareroot winterberry seedlings is over $6 each. Seems kind of steep
