This is pretty much cut and paste from a post I have on another site.
I'm fairly confident all or almost everyone here has attended a show at some time and maybe even a few who were on the other side of the table as a vendor. Friday and Saturday was my first time as a vendor or having a table setup at a show to sell something. Every show is different but I just want to pass along my thoughts. Both days were long, at times sitting there and just watching people walk by. Other times you spend a lot of time talking to someone who you know is just wasting your time. If your lucky enough to get a table that has power to it you can keep busy on your laptop and keep your phone charged. If your without your limited to how long your battery will last. Then you get close talkers or people who do not know anything about personal hygiene. So keep these things in mind next time you attend an event. Was it worth it for me, I'd have to say yes as I did get 2 sales and a few people who said they'd be in touch but I take that with a grain of salt. Will I do it again, yes I'm attending one at the end of the month that Is a larger show than the one I just attended and again in March for a smaller show.

I used to have to work the equipment shows. I hated it because there were very few serious buyers. The biggest hurdle was to get people to stop at your both. We always had a unique piece of equipment even if we knew there were no buyers for it. The optics of it drew people in. We also always had a basket of candy. You get them to stop and who knows who they tell about the cool thing they saw. There will be a large % of people that have no interest in buying anything no matter what they see. It is just a day out for them, and yes bad hygiene is a show norm.

I did have a box for a drawing but that didn't draw them in.

Bring a big cooler and be the bloody mary guy at the show. Other vendors love that.

I thought about getting a little popcorn machine and sell bags of popcorn. But most places that hold the event have a no carry in allowed as they have their own stand. At least that's the norm in my area.

At least that's the norm in my area. Our competitor had a popcorn machine. My guess is you would have to give it away. Shouldn't be any different than giving away the bite size candy bars.

I have worked a lot of trade shows for the machine tool industry. I’ve never had an issue with hygiene and a customer. Probably because we usually aren’t open to the general public.
As for people walking by, my company insists we engage people passing thru. Just say hi or ask if they are enjoying the show. Some people will be reluctant to stop at a table but if you give them any kind of reason, then they stop.
The time wasters are tough. If I find myself with one, I try to engage anyone who glances my way. It helps to break free of the time hog.
