Looking at booking a week on the Ash River this summer. Fishing with the wife, so it will be pretty "low impact" fishing. That said, think the fishing would be better in early or late August? It will depend on the weather, which you know. Fishing can improve once water temperatures start to drop.

We'll still have chickens to take care in June though. A gal we know owns the resort, so I would hope she'd at least give me a few hints/tips on where to try. I'm thinking we'll go the last full week of August.

Late August I’d guess. Walleye start to pick up and colder temps up there at night.

We're heading up to the Orr area relatively soon. A guy should really get the boat out well in advance and go over things. It hasn't seen the water in two years. I have kept it winterized and have replaced a number of things over the years (not the tires though).
I took it to town fill it up with premium. Coming back home the driver side trailer tire blew the tread right off, taking the wheel well with it. The tire didn't lose pressure amazingly. I limped it home and will go get two new tires and a new spare/rim tomorrow in L.P. Very fortunate it happened close to home I suppose. The trailer lights still work, so I'll just haul it without the wheel well. I've no idea if I can find a replacement for a 21 year old trailer. I hope that's the only "surprise" the boat/trailer/pickup give me on the trip.

We caught walleyes, smallies, and pike during our week on the Ash River/Lake Kabetogama. Very little effort went into our fishing, it wasn't a fishing vacation. We trolled crankbaits in 5-12' or so of water mid day. If a person really wanted to fish hard, I think it could be pretty incredible (not Ontario fly-in incredible).
Kab is huge and you can access a number of other lakes with no portaging. It is a truly massive water system. If I was a big time pleasure boater, I could see owning a $75K+ boat and just running around up there. You could run wide open for hours and hours and not run out of water.

Sounds lie a great place. Never been. Catching fish is a bonus these days....tho I suppose your far enough north.

I just sent the check out to reserve the same week for this year. I think for as long as the local gal owns the place, we'll continue going that week every year.

It sounds like a good place for a week. That week in August is reportedly the quietest week of the summer. When we left last summer, we were both close to buying a much nicer boat and trying to find a place to spend the month of August up there. There's so much water there that you can just run for hours (with a Navionics unit and chip anyway).
