Hi Group,
I think I may have a problem on my west boundary. To my west there is a land locked 40 with an absent owner. There is a very large pond on it so there is really only 7 acres of woods, and the rest is impassable marsh or pond. Up until recently there was no activity on that 7 acres until last season where I saw my other neighbor on it. The 7 acres is all 30-year-old spruce and is a good bedding area. I think my neighbor is using my open field to access the property and I would like to capture him on my place.
I'm not sure how to capture this guy but I am thinking some type of a camera that would capture movement of a large area, say 5 acres. I'm not sure if this is the best way to do this so I am open to ideas.
How would you catch this guy?

I can only think trail cams.
he must be accessing across the field from the south of you, right? then gets to yours, and crossing in from there?
he must have permission from one of the adjacent landowners just to get back to that area to begin his access?

Yep, He owns the field to the SW and his place abuts the woods on the north side of his property. He crosses onto my place which is east of the woods goes north and then goes west to a stand that is a natural pinch point between the woods and the pond. He is walking through prairie grass so it's hard to see his trail but he is mostly hunting the area with bow and during the weekday when I am not at my place. He also hunts muzzy season which I am not around for. He is a decent guy and I could just confront him. The area is a bedding area and I prefer we both just stay out of it as I think he is screwing up the area. I doubt he has permission to hunt it.

I can get my Spartan to take pics at certain times of the day so I can see the whole field. If you can pinpoint his approximate crossing point. I bet you could get him on there?

You could just tell him you have a grainy picture of a trespasser on that field and tell him you have cell cameras out to catch that person. Maybe that would keep him out. I have what is called a plot watcher camera that takes a wide view picture of a field every 30 seconds (that can be adjusted) and then you can play those individual pictures like a video and view each individual picture as well. It is a great tool to see if deer (or trespassers) are using a larger field but too far away for a motion sensing camera to catch, but you really couldn't identify anyone clearly from those pictures since it is a really wide view picture that is hard to zoom in on. So you could verify a guy is walking across your field, but it is doubtful that the picture would be clear enough to get a trespassing conviction.
If your neighbor crosses your property then he is certainly in the wrong. If the vacant property isn't posted and he can access it a different way then there is the possibility he has a legal access to that property.

It doesnt appear to be landlocked. The 40 is showing owned by Robert Stark trust. its attached to the 160 on its SE corner that is also owned by Robert Stark trust.
edit - oh I think I see what your saying. He is possibly walking through your old field rather than crossing into that 40 from the SE corner. He is trying to get to the stand without walking thru his property and spooking everything out on his approach to the stand.

I'd just call him up and ask. Honestly see what he's doing, and then tell him you don't want him on your property.

I'd just call him up and ask. Honestly see what he's doing, and then tell him you don't want him on your property. If he is a good neighbor, stop and visit with him. Maybe just tell him he can walk within ten feet of the line on your side. Or ask if he knows who was walking through your grasses.

Just mention it is pretty gutsy for someone to trespass and if ever catch them they are in trouble…you are called Big Jerry for a reason. Ha ha

I’d invest in a Tactacam Reveal and set it up high pointing down if possible. After the initial purchase $10 a month for unlimited photos isn’t a huge cost. I’d also make sure you have posted signs where you suspect he’s crossing. I wouldn’t accuse him of trespassing until you have proof.

I’d invest in a Tactacam Reveal and set it up high pointing down if possible. After the initial purchase $10 a month for unlimited photos isn’t a huge cost. I’d also make sure you have posted signs where you suspect he’s crossing. I wouldn’t accuse him of trespassing until you have proof. Like the idea of Cell trailcam. The only problem is that by mounting a camera high and pointing it down , the camera would be covering a very small area. I think Jerry said he is cutting thru his field but it is hard to tell where he is traveling. Probably the best plan would be to sit down and talk to the guy.

A few years ago we had a newer neighbor stop by our camp one day and sort of accuse us of putting bullets into the side of his house. It was awkward for him and kind of pissed me off. The previous owners had kids that probably did it. There’s no line of site between our shooting range and his home. Our range is downhill into the interior of our property. I’d have been concerned if I were him too but, I’d never accuse anyone of something without having evidence to back it up. If Jerry went to all neighbors and said he was having trespassing problems that might fly better. I’d still think 3-4 trail cameras in the right locations would catch them if they are moving along there. It probably won’t happen again until the fall.

When you are an absentee landowner, it can be hard to deal with these things. My cabin was burned by somebody.

Thanks for the ideas guys.
I'll probably do both, setup a camera and talk to him. His family has 200+ acres in the neighborhood so you would think he would not need this 7 acres.
I am pretty certain he does not have permission to hunt the 7 acres so I should be able to come to some agreement with him. If he is difficult then I may have a bigger problem.
