We came home from town a few minutes ago. SUV with two mismatched headlights was rolling through ahead of us checking things out at 5 mph. I did my best LEO imitation while creeping on the come up (scoping the license plate from various angles with headlights on high/low) behind them. They'd stop, I'd stop. Eventually they took off like a bat out of hell.
Meth heads/scrappers are gonna keep me on my toes.

Not fun! What do you consider large caliber? 9mm, 45, 44mag?

Not fun! What do you consider large caliber? 9mm, 45, 44mag? .357, .44, .454, 10mm....I currently own and carry a Ruger 9mm with multiple clips. Fun to shoot, but not sure it would stop a methhead with the first round or two. Also, it isn't an "intimidating" weapon when openly carried in a chest holster. I want a great big, shiny gun that stands out like a fart in church when I carry it in a Denali/chest holster. Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag is what you want.

Buy a handgun that you can handle and shoot accurately. I would also buy one your wife can handle.
If you don't have to conceal it I would buy a gun with light recoil like a steal bodied 9mm. Practice with cheap ammo and carry with +p ammo.
I would also think about buying a pump short barrel defense shotgun with a sling. Put double XX buckshot for defense.

IMO size isn't that big of an issue. To me shot placement is what it's all about. A well placed shot with a 38 no ones getting back up. For home defense a short barrel pump shot gun with pistol or birds eye grip & some can't be beat. It's got to be something your comfortable with shooting.

The only problem with that is if you ever have to use it you can't hit anything. Most guys who shoot a 44 mag are very inaccurate because they flinch plus you can't afford to practice with a 44 mag. I have a 44 mag and to get 3 rounds on target quickly is very difficult and I have a pretty good grip. If you are openly carrying a handgun with a holster everybody would be able to see a 5-6' barrel 9mm.

Not that I think I'd ever need it in my current home but you never know. I have several well placed hand guns that I can get to very fast. Which would allow me time enough to get to this.

There's a short barrel 870 loaded with buckshot by my side of the bed. The 9mm lays on the nightstand as well.
The point of a great big shiny handgun being openly carried is mainly deterrence. I'd like for anybody rolling through here to see said large shiny handgun on my chest while I'm out and about.

44 mag S&W 629 would definitely fit your description. They are pricey now. Taurus makes a couple different pistols that would meet your description without breaking bank.

With that said I shoot the Super Redhawk better than all but one of my 9's, and it has way less recoil than a 1911 in 45. Can't even find a box of 44 on a shelf right now though.

I wandered around with a 4" S&W 686+ in a chest holster at Kamp Kooch about half the time. It's shiny and obvious, and damn loud with 125 grain .357 rounds. It really compensated for my tiny man parts.
