What's your guys's thoughts on a minnow pond? I have a little pond in the front yard that is about 10ft in diameter and 1.5ft deep. We have 100+ temps in the summer. No shade over the pond.
Is if feasible to raise Fathead minnows in this pond?
What would it take? Do I need to add some nesting cover? Aeration?

I have a couple ponds about that size and it is maybe 2.5-3ft deep and I'm planning on adding fatheads and grass shrimp to it once the ice melts. I can't answer your question but I'm not going to aerate. My goal is offspring and lots of them so once the adults spawn I don't care if they survive. Young fatheads probably will be fine in the shallow low oxygen water and I will net them out in the fall.

Sounds like we have the same goals. I would love to have them reproduce and have a constant supply of bait and something to periodically stock a fish pond with. I wonder what type of cover they need for spawning...

Basically a male builds a nest to guard and the eggs will be deposited underneath something. A simple mat or piece of cardboard floating in the water is all that is needed. I think any vegetation or branches would work also.

Forage ponds are very cool but can be challenging. I'm trying to setup a big one this year with mud minnows, sticklebacks, and bluegills. Mud's and stickles trap great during spring and fall and the gills during the summer. No aeration, average 2' deep, 2 acres.
