I was just out spraying tulips and a few other ornamentals with Deer Out. Walked past a bunch of lilacs and the Gdamn deer have nipped many of the buds off. I remember deer browsing lilacs at my folks' old place back in the 90s, but have not seen it since. I'm going to have stock up on repellent and get a dedicated sprayer just for weekly repellent spraying.

Cut a knee high tree off at the ground both times.

Anyone have any advice on renewing old lilacs? This one has been in my parents yard since i was born. really starting to look it's age. Wonder if a guy can do any any pruning on it.

I had some old lilacs at my old place. Grandma had planted them sometime in the 60s I imagine. I removed 1/3 of the old growth, down to about 3'. Did that over the course of 3-4 years and they went back to being "bushes" instead of small trees. Throwing a few lbs. of pell lime (or some wood ashes) on them won't hurt anything either.

^ Yep, thin out the heavy trunk like stuff first and over a few years trim them back. You should trim immediately after they are done flowering.
